My thoughts are with his family and friends. You and I have no idea what he had to deal with. If you're such a fan of his then you would know that he had a really rough childhood and adolescence, and that his lyrics were dark and depressing at times. He had demons, and depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain that sometimea can't just be 'thought away'. Every person is different.
All in all, you sound very condescending about a person you've never met, so of course his grieving fans are going to retaliate. I'm not trying to troll you or be a bitch. If you don't think so, try reading and rereading your post out loud, or maybe to someone that you trust. Humble yourself and have some respect for the dead. Check yourself. I'm not calling it "unfair", I'm still accepting all the verbal attacks and that was my answer to them. Never did I say it is unfair. After dealing with all these things since childhood, I've developed a thicker skin. Don't make the things up.
I know almost all of the things he shared publicly. I'm not cruel or anything. Maybe that was just a bad word choice.
But still I stand by my own opinions that committing suicide is a bad thing. Just because my favourite artist did that, it's not gonna change my views. I will never romanticise suicide. That'll make me a hypocrite.
I have a friend in the hospital right now whom I've known most of my life, who is there because she tried to commit suicide. She has three kids that if she had succeeded, she would have left behind, but I do not consider her to be a coward or the act pathetic, and neither does her family. I consider her to be someone who really needs help and someone who has been struggling for a long time to the point where she felt the pain was this bad for her.
In society, we teach people to hide pain, and not talk about it because it makes other people uncomfortable, or to just deal or get over things that may be hurting them a lot deeper than we know, or we become too busy with our own lives to take the time to even notice when friends or family are suffering. We make it a shame to cry and a shame to be depressed, and then we expect people to just be happy and able to manage all the time. It's not so black and white like that. I see my friends, face, I see how deep she has been struggling, and I just hope there is something or someone who can help her through.
I'm extremely shocked by this cause I grew up listening to him and his music. It's crazy how theses musicians are just killing themselves instead calling out for help. When Chris died that was his opportunity to speak out and say he was feeling the same way but he's kept his mouth closed on the issue. It's incredibly wrong to do this to his wife and children, now his kids have to grow up fatherless and that's not fair to them. It's a selfish act when you know people love and support you, if your struggling with an addiction and you know you can't go through it on your own anymore-you call for help. If your feeling alone or depressed even though people show you their there for you- you call for help. Stop thinking about yourself and think of the pain and disappointment your putting on everyone around you. I pray that God will be there to support his family at this time cause it hard handling something like this.
And I'm tired of people romanticize suicide and saying it's everything else's fault except that person. Suicide is a CHOICE people, not something that's mandatory to do. Giving up on yourself, giving up on your life, giving up on the people who love you and not thinking of them and their feelings is wrong discouraging. It's takes bravery to admit you're broken and need help.
It definitely feels weird. I'm not a fan who listen to their songs everyday but I've been listening to their music since I was a teen. I often listen to it and was even listening to their music this week. We will never have a new album with Chester singing and that is very sad.

There might be a lot behind this, bro. My girlfriend is tapering off of benzodiazepines right now, and she's going through a years-long process of unbearable and almost constant pain and suffering. She talks to others going through the same thing in an online forum, and people kill themselves all too often because of how horrible the withdrawals are, from a medication they were prescribed and only took as directed. A lot of people are thinking this is what caused Chris Cornell of Soundgarden's suicide a few months ago, as I believe he had cut off benzodiazepines cold turkey, and that often leads to the worst symptoms. It's basically a brain and central nervous system injury, and it affects your entire body, internally and externally, with crazy pains and sensations. Can't even begin to explain how terrible it is. I'm wondering if Chester was going through something similar, because these pills are widely and irresponsibly prescribed. Or it could have been some sort of mental disorder. We look at these famous people like demigods when they're really just men and women like us, going through life, dealing with problems, external and internal. Just a sad situation here.
@karahiri I know about that incident. But we can let bygones be bygones. There are so many women who have been raped but they are standing rock solid. There are some famous examples too. He was a celebrity, he had support of fans, fellow band memebers, he had money, resources, opportinities and most importantly, a voice unlike common people who cannot even beg for help.
Yes, depression is fatal but it's certainly not incurable. Suicide shouldn't be accepted as a remedy.
I liked Linkin Park when I was 11 and then couldn't stand them afterwards. Having said that, I never wished the dude would commit suicide. I just simply didn't listen to their music.
It's insulting when people say they're glad he's dead because they didn't like his music. Or when people say he's a coward for it or even say he had all the money and fame and yet did that. No one knows what was going through his head and celebrity or not, he was still someone's kid, father, sibling, friend, etc.
Depression is no joke. I've gone through it and I may have not had suicidal thoughts but imagine trying to do everything you can to cheer yourself and yet feeling down all the time. That's what depression is like. Even if you drink alcohol, use any kinda drugs, etc all that does is temporarily numb the pain. It does NOT make it go away.
What's also shitty is when you try to talk about your problems causing depression or your depression itself, some people act like you're crazy, whiny, etc and then you're left dealing with it yourself, all bottled up, which makes it worse.
Lots of people who've had depression made it through. Some have not, like Chester in this case. And it does not make him a coward. It's very tragic, not just for him but his family and the ones who cared for him.
I know that you can get depression even if you have it all in your life. It's like a disease. But it doesn't mean you go kill yourself. Millions of people made it, you can do too.
You're misinterpreting this. NO ONE is saying people with depression should kill themselves but instead get help.
One of the major problems with depression. Is society's attitude towards it. When I had it, I tried telling people about it and some of them would yell MOVE ON, get over it, or act like I'm weak and just whiny when I went through some really fucked up situation that caused it in the first place. No matter how hard I tried to overcome it, it'd still linger in the back of my mind and it made me feel like a burden to others if I brought it up, thus making me feel like I have to fight it all on my own. Like my mind was my own worst enemy.
And yes millions made it through, I have gotten thriving it but when people are depressed and contemplating, they are not thinking straight. They actively think the world is better off without them which is horrible.

Explaining how depression affects a person is like explaining colors to a blind person. They can't fully grasps just how it is. People call them cowards among many names. I went through severe depression through my teen years and into my early 20s. At one point I almost ate a hollow point from a.45 glock. People out in certain situations, can have different outcomes. Like with criticism, it can fuel one person to work harder or it could kill the motivation of another. People in general vary in so many different ways that no one has the right to calk another a coward for such feelings. Imagine the worst physical pain you've ever felt, and feeling that sane pain every second, if every minute, if every hour, of every day, week, month, year. A heavy weight on your chest that makes it difficult to breathe, a never ending headache tgat just won't go away. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. People get tired of that pain and anything and everything they have tried won't make it stop, so they see no other way. When I was a finger twitch away, that feeling I fekt was the worst I've ever experienced, but I understood that I was not the only one who felt like that. So I put it away and hoped to help others. I wanted to be the hand that picks someone up when they've been kicked down too many times. I want them to know, they don't have to fight that battle alone. Never underestimate the power of words. It could break someones mental fortitude or it could pull someone above drowning waters inside themselves.

Linkin Park is the reason I got into music, now they're broken, terribly. I just wish this turns out to be a nightmare and someone wakes me up immediately. I feel like there were so many people close to Chester (their band is like a family, not just some group of friends), I wish he reached out to at least one of them. This could have been avoided. He created such a shell that nobody realized what he had been going through. Look at all his interviews, the most recent ones too. Does he look like someone who's gonna end his life or even considering it? Why didn't he just get some help from his loved ones? Why pretend to be the happiest person in the group when you're on the verge of destroying yourself?
You know, I was suicidal long ago. Around 7-8 years ago. And who helped me out of that state of mind? Linkin Park did.

It's completely unfair for you to call him a coward. You have no idea what he was going through and taking your own life is not pathetic. It's either a cry for help or it's because you see no way to end the suffering without taking your life. You have no right to disrespect his memory by calling him a coward. I simply wanted to say the grieving process, especially in instances like these, is very complex. Anger at a person committing suicide is not uncommon for loved ones and family. And they have to understand those feelings are apart of that process. You have to work through those feelings and get to a better place.

For instance, some women committed suicide during the Srebrenica massacre because they were so terrified about the inevitable rape and brutal torture that was facing them. Were they cowards? Everyone has different opinions. You might encourage suicide bombers as they think it'll lead them to heaven (there's no proof), but I may disagree with it. And there cannot be a concrete proof regarding who's right.
There is a difference between ending a life and ending YOUR life. Euthanasia refers specifically to assisted suicide, not to suicide commited entirely by the individual with no help. That is just suicide, it is never euthanasia. You are quite wrong.

Voluntary euthanasia is when the person being killed has requested to be killed. It is not the same as suicide. Jumping from a building is suicide, even if the building is on fire. Nobody assisted you in jumping.

I used to think similarly as you about suicide, until I've learned more about them. He definitely is a big loss. Their music got me through many painful times of my life and I'm fortunate enough to see him live - hug and thanked him.
Suicide isn't an escape nor a sign of cowardliness - It's more than that. It's a lot of mental issues. We won't understand ones pain since we all walk different paths of lives. He suffered from addiction and being abused. Those two mixed together are time bombs.
Some people, like yourself and others pull through. Some just don't know how. Afraid of other's perceptions. It's a constant battle in their minds. I could never guess he would commit suicide. But, I didn't know him and I also didn't know what he was going through. I don't think that people who commit suicide are cowards. Sure, if they have a family and friends who love them, these people are going to suffer. They will ask themselves why, what went wrong, what was this person going through. But, when you're hopeless, when you feel like there's no point in living anymore, that no one can help you and that the pain you're feeling won't ever go away, then suicide becomes an option. I feel like have no right to judge people who did it. They were the only ones who truly knew what they were feeling.
I basically grew up listening to them. My room was filled with LP posters and I bought every single CD. Now I feel like my childhood died too. Although their new album is shit, I still listen to Meteora and Hybrid Theory pretty often. I don't know what's gonna happen to them now but I hope they won't replace Chester because in my opinion he's unrepeatable. This really hit in the feels, man. I was with my friends when we all heard and we all talked about how Linkin Park was the shit when we were little and it was all we wanted to listen to. I haven't got to listen to much of the information surrounding his suicide if there are reasons revealed yet, but I'll certainly give it some time to read through and sit on it. This happens all too often in the world of celebrities and I wish something could be done to protect them from it.
Suicide is a very real, very serious problem and it's not simple to understand. My thoughts go out to his friends and family though. I don't think there's much I can do on my own other than to think of condolences - but their songs have had a meaningful impact on my past.

Such a sad thing. Growing up in the early 2000's it was impossible not to know who they were and most people I knew regardless of musical preference liked at least one of there songs.
I said this after Robin Williams died and still say it now, we need to listen to people when they have problems. Saying it's cowardly or a cowards way out is what leads people to never talking about how they feel and causes them to bottle there emotions until things like this happen. I hope his family can pull through this.
He was a good musician, but his troubled dark past and being in the music industry is not a good combo, many celebrities fall down this path. To anyone reading my comment understand something when you have dark moments, seek help and most importantly keep praying to God to forgive you and ask God every day to help you.

Maybe more people needed to pray for him before this happened. Looking back on his material he's been asking for help for almost two decades. He held out for a pretty long time, it's saddening that he was overcome before that helping hand reached him.

Calling him a coward is a disgusting thing for you to say. This is part of the reason why mental illnesses will never be taken seriously enough in the entertainment industry and in normal life as well. It goes a lot deeper than not "feeling" or "performing" well. You lived a different life than he did. How could you possibly compare your COMPLETELY different situation to his? Depression is a spectrum. Mental illness is spectrum. No two situations are the same. None are comparable. I SERIOUSLY can't understand people with your line of thinking. However, it's his decision to make.. not yours.

My hostility? Coming from the one who called him a coward and says that suicide is a pathetic act? Now you're saying that you weren't calling him a coward "in particular"... when that is exactly what you typed? You typed a free-standing sentence. "They're cowards". Absolutely NO ROOM for a misunderstanding. Obviously, you have little respect for him if you're saying these terrible things about him. Please... You're just a bowl of contradictions, aren't you?
Sounds like you better know about me than I do. Where the heck did I type that Chester is a coward? I don't want to give you unnecessary explanations because you can teach the unknowledgeable but not the fool. I feel sorry for the people who deal with you.
It's definitely sad. May he rest in peace. However, as Bono rightfuly said (in different words) :Any life is worth more than an idea, which means that a life is worth more than the idea that the person was. I'm sad to see him go because any peson shouldn't end up taking their life not because of the fact that the person is a celebrity. I see suicide from a more intelectual point of view not an emotional one. Suicide is something I can't really have an opinion because I've never experienced afterlife, except for when I was born.
Suicide is sad. It's not a matter of bravery or cowardice if you commit suicide but more about how trapped you feel and how many options you feel you have left. If Chester couldn't get over his past traumas and addictions and live a life he felt meaningful then I get he felt this was the only way out. I'm sad he thought that and always think there's a better way but I rarely think people who commit suicide are cowards.
I think that one is in a very very dark place to commit this. I don't see it as cowardly. Usually the person is severely emotionally, mentally exhausted. Asking for help is asking for attention, for some people that can be very challenging. The first time I heard "crawling " i was like 11 years old. Their songs really pulled me through those angry teenage years. I've seen them twice and will forever be grateful for having such honest music.
