On straight skills alone, Eminem is #1 for me. I was in on him early when he was still underground, hat tip to WERS Emerson College’s radio station’s nightly hip hop show. I’d say I don’t always love his songs as a whole, like the beats, melodies, etc, and I’m not fan of his “chainsaw voice” as I call it. I prefer his old late 90s drugged out, almost lazy flow. His verse on 3hree-6ix-5ive (“the underground shit that [he] did wit’ Skam”) is peak Em to me.

“Some people say I’m strange; I tell ‘em ‘ain’t shit changed; I’m still the same lame asshole with a different name; came late to the last show with a different dame; my brain ate from the last O that I sniffed of ‘caine; you know you spaced the fuck out like George Lucas; when your puke is turnin’ to a yellowish-orange mucus; so when I grab a pencil and squeeze it between fingers; I’m not rapper, I’m a demon who speaks English; a freak genius, too extreme for the weak and squeamish; burn you alive til you screamin’ to be extinguished; cuz when I drop the science, motherfuckers tell me to stop the violence; start a fire and block the hydrants; I’m just a mean person, you’ve never seen worse than; so when Slim gets this M-16 burstin’; you gettin’ spun backwards like every word of obscene cursin’; on the B-side of my first single with the clean version; stoppin’ your short life when you still a teen virgin; unless you get a kidney specialist and spleen surgeon; in the best hospital possible for emergency surgery; to try to stop the blood from your ruptured sternum internally; I’ll take it back before we knew each other’s name; run in the ultrasound and snatch you out your mother’s frame; I’ll take it further back than that, back to Lovers’ Lane; to the night you was thought up, and cockblock your father’s game; I plead the 5th like my jaws were muzzled; so suck my dick while I take a shit and do this crossword puzzle; and when I’m down with ten seconds left in the whole bout; I’ma throw a headbutt so hard I knock us both out”
It’s honestly hard for me to pick just one though. Li’l (GAG will change that to “little”🙄😒) Wayne is outstanding, I’d be remiss not to mention him. As opposed to Eminem, I HATED him at first, like in his Hot Boyz days. I came around with the first The Carter album. B. M. Jr. hooked me.
I was really big into Dipset in the 00s too, I feel like Cam’ron gets a bad rap. I liked Juelz Santana and Hell Rell a lot, just on some gangsta shit. Probably not in the conversation for greatest lyricists, but sometimes it’s just about a vibe.
And I came up in the 90s, so I’m most partial to that era. You feel corny saying the typical list, but it’s the typical list for a reason. Nas, Jay-Z, (time for all the dead rappers haha) Biggie, 2Pac, Big L, Big Punisher... all put out some heat in the mid-to-late 90s. Mobb Deep is another favorite. Wu-Tang Clan put out two classics, and the individual members made even more. I’m a big Ghostface Killah guy. Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is all-time. And Dr. Dre, I don’t know if it’s his actually rapping as much as his overall production, but for my money, The Chronic is in my Top 5 albums of all-time, and I’m talking original 1992 The Chronic, not The Chronic 2000, which seems to be the people’s choice. Also an excellent album, but there’s just nothing like early 90s west coast gangsta rap and G-Funk.
I don’t know, I love rap too much to pick just one, haha

The only rap band I think I've ever heard and liked was Rage Against The Machine, so I'm inclined to say Zach de la Rocha.

XOnce you get out of the 90's, there are no good rappers anymore. Just a shit ton of mumbling assholes with autotune.
