Why are people hating on the new Pixar movie Soul?

While I don’t know why people are hating the move, tbh I haven’t seen any truly negative reviews of the film yet? It’s just a bad movie! Like justice Stevens said regarding pornography “I cannot explain it, but I know it when I see it!“ When I saw this movie… it was bad! The whole idea that souls are given their personalities BEFORE a they arrive on earth, removes parenting and life experiences as defining points in the development of a persons personality, that’s really offensive! Parents don’t matter life doesn’t matter getting raped at 13 doesn’t matter, NOPE! Your personality was “fixed” before you were ever born! It also implies that those who do NOT survive a near death experience, die because of lack of inspiration or determination... again THAT’s offensive! Many of the issues Joe struggles with, made me wonder “this guy was WAY too old to be THIS naive, they’re treating the character like he’s a child”! It’s like the writers just hope that false inspiration will override any critical thinking. Also, it’s kind of offensive that far too many animated black characters (or characters voiced by black actors) are NOT human! Think: Shrek, & The Princess and the Frog. Why was Disney’s first black princess turned into a frog? I don't know, but that’s just an observation in general! This film is definitely aimed at adults, yet the humor seems geared toward kids! It’s like they didn’t know what kind of movie to make... kids or adults, so they made a somewhat serious adult film, for the parents, and threw a load of childish humor in there to keep the kids entertained! Good writer’s can make children’s movies extremely entertaining for the parents. The chemistry between Tina Fey and Jaime Fox was brilliant, and it carried the film. One last thing, the first and third acts were okay, but the second act just dragged on! I actually found myself looking at my watch, wondering when this thing was going to be over! Like I said the third act pulled me back in, but it just wasn’t enough to make this worth while! I often measure my liking of a movie over time by the amount of times I watch it again, like Toy Story, Minions, and Up. I cannot imagine ever wanting to watch this again, which is truly a shame. The film showed so much promise, I loved the representation in the movie, and Disney/Pixar need to do a better job of making films with equal representation that are as funny and entertaining as the likes of Finding Dory, Despicable Me, Minions, or even the adult oriented Ants.

@Jamie05rhs Thanks, but I know that, and I actually didn’t say it was Pixar. The point was that they should have done a better job of making films with equal representation that are as funny and entertaining AS THE LIKES OF Finding Dory, Despicable Me, Minions, or even the adult oriented Antz. The production company behind the film I’m using as a comparative neither negates, nor validates that comparison.

I think it's a nice movie, but for some reason I didn't enjoy it as much as for example did with Coco.

Visually I found pleasent how the real world, the people and the city of NY looked. But there was something that wasn't as appealing to me about the after-life/before-life and the souls design.

Then I like the message, but there's something about how is told that didn't move me as much as I think it should. I felt like the message was over explained through dialogue in comparison to the way other Pixar movies convey their message.

Still nice though. Still a good message to convey. I don't think it's deserving of hate.

I haven't seen it (yet), but Pixar's movie quality has been in decline for a while, so it frankly wouldn't surprise me.

Based on a quick search, it doesn't look like it's getting genuinely "bad" reviews so much as it's just being written off as "unique but not their best." Or the incredibly low bar to achieve, "favorite movie of 2020."

I like the movie. I feel like the message was vague and uninspiring. I hate that a movie animated and centered around black culture was uninspiring. I feel the animation in the “afterlife” was lazily produced the movie seemed rushed but I like that it opened doors for majority black animation in Pixar. I hope to see it again maybe some better and actually portraying black people a little more realistic versus caricature-like, despite that; it was very exciting to see a story that wasn’t based in black trauma and suffering. It was entertaining and it’s worth a watch so you can form your own opinion and understanding.

I have not heard any hate about this movie, only positive comments. And that comment about using mostly white voice actors is a load of shit. The cast of Soul is diverse and consists of multiple different races.

I don't hate it or anything, but it's hard to imagine myself wanting to watch it.

Everyone's heads are shaped as pears in that movie...

I think some people dislike it because the movie did not show what they were expecting of the life before and life after. I honestly think it's a good movie. I loved it. :)

It was a good movie it taught a lesson. people are upset that a white woman was in a black man body for a while but they missed what the movie is about

There's a huge buzz going on in my country around of this movie because they choose mostly white actors to play the voice overs when this a movie about Soul Music and about the Soul culture.
