"City of the Dead", a 1960 British film known in the USA as "Horror Hotel" although the American version omits some critical dialog so it wouldn't upset religious members of the American audience.

This film is now in the public domain in the USA, so it can be seen for free. Here it is on YouTube:
This film starts with the burning at the stake in 1692 of Elizabeth Selwyn, a woman accused of witchcraft in Whitewood Massachusetts. The film then jumps to Professor Alan Driscoll, a history professor at a liberal arts college, telling his class of that event. One student, the beautiful Nan Barlow, is enthralled and wants to learn of witchcraft and do her research paper on it. She goes to Whitewood...
Here's an excerpt of a conversation between Nan and Reverend Russell of Whitewood Church:
1) (NAN) Nan Barlow, a young beautiful college student interested in doing a term paper on witchcraft who has come to Whitewood for research. In 1691, Elizabeth Selwyn was burned at the stake in Whitewood during the witch trials.
2) (REV) Reverend Russell, an old blind reverend of Whitewood Church, the Christian church in Whitewood - one with no congregation.
NAN, visiting the church with REV opening the door: I'm told this was once a house of worship.
REV: It is still a house of worship. I am the reverend of this church As long as the breath of life
is within me, this house shall remain God's house.
NAN: Must have been a beautiful building.
-(door creaks open)
REV: To me, it is still beautiful.
NAN: I'm sorry. What a shame the people have let it fall into such a state.
REV: Strangers rarely come to Whitewood. Who are you?
NAN: I'm Nan Barlow, I'm staying at the Raven's Inn.
REV: Why have you come to Whitewood?
NAN: Well... because I'm interested in witchcraft.
REV: Young woman, leave Whitewood. Leave Whitewood tonight. For 300 years, the devil has hovered
over this city, made it his own. The people in it, are his. Evil has triumphed over good, here. Look at my church, I have no parish. No one worships here. His is the power.
NAN: What power?
REV, very upset: Leave Whitewood. Leave Whitewood tonight! I beg of you!
NAN: What power?
REV (backing away and closing the door): Leave before it is too late!
You can see that except starting at 23:00.
Just remember, you have to wait until the hour of 13.
I'll be honest, I'm relatively new to liking horror, and haven't gotten around to watching many movies/series yet. Though I do have an ever expanding list... I'm open to suggestions, I prefer more Sci Fi horror, but anything dark with a decent story will do.
