Does playing violent games makes you violent? Why or why not?

I don’t really even see the FPS games I play as violent, tbh… it’s more like a competitive sport to me.
Take Halo for instance… small teams of 4v4 on a symmetric (or asymmetric) map, with certain areas and weapons that are advantageous to you to control… how your team coordinates, pushes, and positions themselves around each other to defend these points of interest…
It almost reminds me of a hockey team on the attack. You gain the zone, the pressure is on, the defending team is backed into a corner, and your team positions itself in such a way that allows it to move the puck around to create scoring chances. Movement, reaction time, and consistency is the name of the game. You can really take over a match quickly if you’re outplaying the enemy.
In objective games, you’re killing other players off like you’re “checking” a hockey player out of the play, momentarily. Sure your individual skill plays a huge part in your gunfights, but it’s a slow burn to the end… everything snowballs up to the end where the better team comes out on top.
Take this as an example… and I just have to say, the play at 1:05, risking falling off the map, pulling off this highly advanced sequence of jumps, and then racking up a Triple Kill… as someone who’s played a lot of Halo 3 in my life, that was absolutely insane, and the awareness to “pre-nade” the 3rd guy for the Triple, is an important skill in Halo.
But… long-winded answer… does this all make me want to violently attack someone? Lmao, no… absolutely not. 🤣🤣
Humans have killed each other for millennia over dumber things. Like religion for example. So if video games make people violent then please explain to me why we haven't been a peaceful species since the dawn of time. I'll wait.
Just a beautiful example 👌
Nailed it!
I think it depends on if people know the difference between real and fiction.
At my retail job I had a coworker who believed science is all fake but everything in movies was real life. He knew I grew up in the country and so he asked me why I’m not murdered yet. I asked him what he meant and he said “Well there’s cowboys in the country and they all have guns and kill people. That’s what they do in movies so it has to be real”. I just shook my head and left. I think the same goes with video games.
I can't know which is left and which is right! Unless someone tells me. If i grew at a house where everything my parents tells me is all what i know (the guy you described) might grew up in a house like this 🤷♂️. I do understand your point here, many can't tell between real and fiction and that where the parent comes in.
It's not about the game
It's about parenting and moderation

No, it does not. Having a weak mind and moral compass makes you violent. I play video games that are considered pretty violent and yet I have no desire to walk out of the house and best someone's ass or shoot them. People are always looking for an excuse for their violent behavior. How about looking at their home or work life. Are their with someone that abuses them? Do they absolutely hate their job? There are a slew of other reasons that could cause someone to become or show violent tendencies. Maybe they are getting mistreated at home. Maybe they have a dickhead for a boss or have worthless co-workers. Maybe the McDonald's down the street keeps getting their order wrong everytime. Video games and movies are just the easiest escape goats so no one has to actually do the work to figure out what is fueling their violent tendencies. A lot of abusers come from families that abused them and they think that is how it works. Some people are just assholes. Take your pick. It is easy to blame something that society deems the problem instead of actually looking for and dealing with the issue that is right in your own backyard.
The answer as always is, it depends.
I'm a game developer, hell, I'm currently working on interesting ways to slaughter people in video games. Do I think what I'm making will make people violent? No. There's a very simple reason. You can't do it in real life. There's no way to reenact this way of murdering people, it's too much based in fantasy.
The expand on that, if you play a game where you jump out of a bush, drag them away from the public and brutally murder them.. That might inspire someone.
If you make a game where you summon the ancient light from another plane where the overseer of divine justice enpowers you to smite your foes in return for collecting seven different trinkets from around the realm.. Probably not very inspiring..
So to conclude, different games have different effects on people, different genres, different ways of telling stories, everything comes together to give people an experience.. Much like a book. Reading Mein Kampf is going to have a different effect than some my little pony stuff.
Game developers should keep this in mind and luckily, are also already enforced to do so through age ratings.
no, that's an excuse... It's like saying "if you watch serial killer documentaries... You will become a series killer"
Like no, most people just watch for entertainment, or play the game for entertainment... But sure there will always be a handful who take great influence by these documentaries and look up to these seriel killer like they are god's... So they make the choice to go out and kill people like their hero in the documentary s... It doesn't mean th documentary made me em. do... they made the choice to mimic th documentary cos they are sick stupid fucked up individuals... Blaming the documentary is just an excuse for their wrong and stupid actions like "hey, it's not my fault. The documentary made me. do. it"
Like no sonny, you made the choice to go out n do it... There's 1000s of other people who watched the documentary n didn't kill... It's the same with video games... They just blame them as an excuse to try n get away with their actions... It's bs
Iv played GTA since I was 6 or 7 n I'm not a criminal
There was a cia study on the topic and they found the rise of violence in adolescents who play video games to be minimal. Look up Adam ruins video games on YouTube and you'll get a better run down of it
As someone who has played video games most of their life, I don't think violent video games makes kids more violent. It makes them more aggressive when the game is frustrating but not violent.
Personally I find playing violent video games actually inspires me to be less violent than watching movies or books. at least in video games I'm getting a rough image in the effort it takes to perform these violent acts but when I watch a movie I sit back and think "they are bad ass I wanna be like them". Ultimately I don't cause I'm an adult with self control but the point remains
Sincerely doubt it. Its like asking if practicing (traditional) martial arts makes you violent. Most evidence points to the opposite.
It could very well be a positive outlet and while there exists people who mistake reality and gaming lets not forget that the world's most lethal TV show ever was Pokemon (unless it changed?) who had hundreds of kids jumping from rooftops thinking they were pidgeys. There exist impressionable people. Some of them can harm themselves or others no matter the media and the help they need is a different topic.
That said of course there can be a higher than average number of violent people in a setting that is pleasing to a violent urge. Might also be a few more (real life) bosses did not get smacked because people had the option to smack a digital boss instead.
Most recent studies show that gaming (in moderation) has positive effects on intelligence, multi tasking and even eye sight (eat that one, parents!).
Yeah, my ex turned in an addicted MMO player, he was sometimes so excited and nervous without any reason. It's a steady stress and reward center stimulation while playing those game and it leaves deep traces in someone's personality if the person plays a lot.
At some point yes! It can stress people
It makes them more agressive. My sister has agression issues when internet does not work well since she can't play her game in a proper well. She can't help us since she has to finish her retarded game. Many players go crazy because of a fucking game. I swear they would beat you up, when you turn off the electricity. There are youtube videos where the boyfriend hit her girlfriend because of retarded game. Just because you dont kill anyone, does not mean you are not violent. So tell me how tf playing games does not make you violent? If i had to date a gamer, i would buy a gun. If he dares to hit me because he could not play his game, i would use my gun.
There is those who gets effected ! Always. I am not trying deffending anyone here, if someone hits you there is something wrong with them.
I swear i read the youtube comments and many of them say they would be violent too. You dont kill but they freak out, go crazy and even physical when you dont let them play
It depends on what kind of gane they play. When they together with other players as a team, then there is peer pressure since you will get hate by your team if you suck.
What i mean is that i know enough people who would hit you when you turn off the electricity wile they were playing their game. When they dont play, they are ok but if you try to interact with them while they are playing, they can get very agressive or even physical
There is a lot going on, i am a gamer since 1988 and i have played against some serious sore losers, i have ended up in many fist fights but 99% of the time we were playing football (fifa and pes) which is a sport game, none violent. Many games can make a person be frustrated, i am one of them specially when i was in my teens. Parents have a big part in all of this and if parents don't handle it! Who will?
I have seen people fight because of video games and i have seen people fight because of sports.
Read my other posts too, idiot. I should not generalize. Do you also play together as a team or only alone?
I just talked about my experience.
Gamers are ok when they dont play but when you interact with them while they play they may get angry
I am sorry for generalizing. When i reply to this question, i was thinking about my sister who i hate. So i am sorry loool.
Understandable for me😊 plus many won't/can't see their behaviour or reaction unless someone do explain or show them over and over again.
I am sorry again for generalizing. I should not do that. I apologize myself for doing this. My first post is anecdotal. I was only speaking about my experience but this does not justify anything. I can imagine that there are many gamers who are not like my sister. So i am sorry again
No need to apologize , i did read your opinion and it was clear that you are not generalizing with the matter. Once again! No need to apologize
Correlation doesn't equal causation. Most likely those people already had the latent aggression in their nature, and video games are just the "excuse" for it to manifest. Suggesting that videogame usage causes domestic abuse is so absurdly illogical, I can't take the claim seriously enough to even bother debunking it.
Just fucking read my other posts where i said that i may be wrong and i was sorry for generalizing, idiot I actually was talking about my experience. So my whole post is anecdotal. I just was shocked seeing bfs/gfs beating their partner up just because they tease them aka dont let them play
So next time read my other posts before bosting stupid posts. I actually agree with you but since you did not read my other posts, you wrote yor post
😘😘
Ugh i am sorry for being rude to you I had a bad day. Anyway i agree with
No worries, in future though it might benefit you to bare in mind that general readers will take path of least resistance and assume your OP is a complete statement / argument, if people don't think to read your post history and form an incomplete assessment of your views, then that's kind of on you, not them. Just being constructive, I got no beef with you lol
No.
But for very certain people it does help their fantasy to hurt and destroy others who hurt them, who have a touch of narcissism, who are ostercished, and have a form of depression that has them playing out a kind of suicidal rage where they get back at others who they feel hurt them. A violent video game will play to their fancy.
Some would say these people are psychopaths, and they are if they carry through in real life, but are often young males who have a hardtime dealing with their negative emotions and violent media, especially games they can play out their violence is the difference.
No it haven't made me or anyone I know violent. When I was obsessed "shooting the head" for 10 hours a day in fps games it had nothing to do with the apparent violent aspect. The joy was getting good at the mechanical skill just like chasing the perfect tennis serve. Or outplaying your opponents with clever and creative tactics.
If you'd ask what real life activity would be closest to tactical shooters, I'd say any sport that requires tactics and individual mechanical skill. The substitute would never be going on the streets and start shooting people in the head lol. I mean I see why some clueless senile would think so, but 99,9% of gamers wouldn't see it that way. Often professional gamers used to play sports before transitioning to esports.
Depends on the player's age.
A ten year old might think if his sibling is being mean, it's totally fine to kick them in ass.
A twenty five year old won't do it.
So long kids understand that fighting for justice is all right and we don't throw punches because we can, I don't see the problem.
Aggression exists with or without video games. Stop blaming your child's tendencies on gaming. The most a game does is make you a nerd.
How does a game makes a nerd of someone?
There are gaming nerds.
There is game of thrones nerds 🤷♂️
What's your point
No, it doesn't.
Animals in general are violent when they think they need to be.
The problem is stupidity makes an animal think they need to be violent during instances when they don't.
Humans have less instances of this because language has allowed us to be more informed than most other species, so we are shocked more often when unneeded violence from a human happens (because its not that common) and some humans respond to this shock by trying to blame some kind of hobby on it.
Gamers are typically nerds, and nerds are typically smarter than non nerds, so logically the violence rates would be lower for them.
Plus fun hobbies reduce stress, so people snap less.
No. I play all kinds of video games, including violent ones, and I am not violent in real life at all. In fact I am the opposite of violent. I try to be kind and helpful to people, especially those that need it like the elderly. I have very protective instincts. For some reason I automatically feel the need to protect women to the extent that I can't ever be aggressive towards them, not even in sports. While I am very competitive with other men, I wouldn't want to seriously fight them unless they threaten me or someone important to me. I am more of a pacifist in real life. I hate war and weapons capable of mass muder/destruction like guns, bombs, nukes, etc. I would never want to kill anyone in real life. I don't mind playing violent video game where you kill enemies because the people aren't real, the game is completely fictional and most characters you kill are soulless npcs with no personality.
All empirical evidence says no, the increase in access to giolent videos games has no correlation with increasing violent crime rates. In fact just the opposite, in the US violent crime rates are down from the 1980s when video games started becoming popular.
So establishing a causal relationship when the increase of one correlates with a decrease in the other is statistically impossible. If anything the opposite could be argued as causal but don’t think there is sufficient data to draw that conclusion. Correlation doesn’t mean causation and any statistician will tell you.
I grew up with gaming and still do game here and there whenever I've worked on other areas in my life (relationship, friends, family, gym, career etc.). I never grew violent because of them. I believe that those who don't overinduldge and don't neglect other important areas in life will have no issues. Given that they haven't grown up or are still living in an abusive environment and that they don't inheritely have any anger management issues.
Those who become violent either have underlying issues or they simply happen to be too serious and overprotective about the very thing that they have allowed their lives to revolve around. To blame videogames for violence is absurd.
People were hurting each other for eons before video games existed. I'm pretty sure there's other reasons why violence happens. And by the way, sometimes violence is totally justified. Depends on the details. Of course if you want to find excuses to avoid holding individuals responsible for their choices you can come up with a long list of causes.
If that was remotely the case, then watching porn should make you a great lover.
Instead it makes you sad and impotent.
Not to mention we would all be raging seed eaters from playing all that Pac-man.
The reality is that there is no scientific basis to blame anything on Video Games. But boomers try anyway.
No, I played a few where you have free will to kill good npcs or not like Skyrim. If it happens by accident like a vampire attacking the town and my arrow misses for an example, I feel pretty bad and the game would be a bit less lively without that npc. I know I go back to the last save point if it does happen.
I don’t know but I have friend who destroy’s stuff when he loses at video games. He destroyed three consoles and his parents replaced them so either it was the games or the parents. But then again this is the same guy to go on and stab his 5 year old sister so I can’t think of anything that can make you do that.
There is a lot going there in what you wrote.
No, majority of gamers all play violent games on some level. Whether it's childish like Mario or Rayman or more for adults like mortal kombat or doom almost all people that plays these games are not out there trying to recreate trying to recreate what they see in the games. However you might see people that don't play see people that don't play video games getting into more violent tendencies which is ironic and if I'm right there was a study done on that but my memory is not the best so if anyone else could help me out that would be cool. But yeah even to use myself as an example to use myself as an example I used get into fights a lot when I was a kid but I was always a violent person and actually used video games as an outlet to keep myself from acting on the frustration and anger I felt.
Nope it doesn’t really make me violent most the time I’ll just start joking around and yelling stuff like “I’ll kill Mickey Mouse” or “I seriously wanna punt a child” but overall it’s all for jokes the only time I get mad is when the annoying people with the mics pop in talking about how much the team sucks.
you're from a posh family aren't you as you said 'child' in heated moments. Call of duty with girls is cool, but GTA5 online lol I can't remember the amount of times I've raged and driven them in a car into the sea 😂
@Alejandro3000 I wouldn’t say my family’s ‘posh’ haha I’ve just spoken like this ever since I was a kid. For me I’ve never been much of a COD person I much more prefer Rainbow Six Siege or Titanfall although I will admit GTA5 is pretty good as well.
It depends on how grounded in reality you are. There are people who can play violent video games, but then stop and become part of this world, but there are those who are very impressionable, and the violent games BECOME their reality. Those are the ones who become dangerous.
Nothing new here. Same thing goes with any large sport or movies/tv shows that are violent, or drugs and so on
videogames don't change who you are. if you are prone to violence, you will get enjoyment out of violent games. if you aren't, you won't get enjoyment out of the "violence" aspect but other aspects of the game.
and in fact violent games can reduce your urges to do actual violence by means of catharsis. i don' t know of any violence increasing mechanisms.
No.
No scientific study so far could find any direct correlation where violent video games would trigger (physical) violence.
Also if they were causing violent behaviour, what about movies/books/... and other media?
As a kid I might have had a few bursts of anger "cuz the dumbass game didn't do the move" or whatever. Now, I just don't care that much. If I lost a game of Dota2, then that's on me. Play better and stop complaining.
Play lol then 🤣🤣🤣
No my brother has been playing call of duty since he was about 12 he’s not violent I’ve been playing gta since about 10 and I’m not violent so I think it’s unfair for people to try to ban video games because video games don’t make people violent those people were already violent
Only low IQ people are negatively affected by violent videogames.
🤣 am not sure if there is anything that can effect on them
According to various extensive studies done over the course of the last 30 or so years, no, violent games do not cause violent behaviors. This has been proven time and time again. However, violent people do tend to gravitate toward violent games.
No, video games don’t make someone violent but there are some disturbing moments in video games that should definitely not be there.
An example would be shooting up civilian airports in call of duty. If I were a COD developer, I’d quit my job after knowing this. I have no idea what they were thinking. Very unnecessary.
People who play violent games get aware of the consequences the character receives. Also those games are the only place where they can release their aggressions instead of releasing it in real life. In case if you don't know, when violent games were released, crime rates went low.
I'll just say I've been playing halo and other fps games at since I was at least five years old.
I wouldn't say I'm violent at all.
Not in the slightest, violence is in human nature, since the dawn of time humans have been killing each other over resources.
One of the first things you have to teach a child is not to hit and steal.
Also violent crime statistics have been going down since video games were invented, causation no, but if video games made people violent then you’d see the opposite.
I mean wr used to burn people alive for witchcraft and people used to attend public hangings with a picnic basket so probably humans have just always been violent.
No, videos games don't make people violent
I don't think it affects your actions at all.
But I definitely think it desensatizes you to actions of others. But it's not just violent games but all media, movies etc.
They don't make players violent. They lower the resistance to violence by enabling players to act it out in the context of the games. If I were mowing down enemy with a mini-gun in the context of the game, I think it would normalize actually doing it in real life to some extent.
I don't think so. Lots of people play violent video games and everyone sees some type of violent entertainment. While just a few of them may commit violent crime, most of them won't. If violent video games or entertainment really made people violent then violence would probably be a lot more commonplace than it is.
I don’t believe playing violent games can make you violent but violent people probably enjoy playing violent games. My brother and his best friend were full on gamers that played violent games and they’re both physicians now & want to work for Doctors Without Borders.
Mario Kart makes me violent
You mean "competitive" 🤣🤣🤣
Nope completely psycho violent lol
lmao, no you don’t I promise
@blackcupcake I believe it
Mk and smash bros is a good game to ruin friendships
@NathanDavis you can vouch for me😂
It's only because you keep losing 😆 imagine actual tennis (guy serves to girl... 15love, 30love, 40love.. game set and match Federer!) 6:0 6:0 6:0.
@Alejandro3000 But you are not Federer, that's why you use your imagination to somewhat feel superior
@NathanDavis well i played doubles tennis in a real court, me and my girl partner won. I never told our rivals that i practised tennis with a russian tennis star lmao They couldnt tell how they lost and so were having a go at each other :D
@Alejandro3000 see, keep living in your imagination... but you're still not Federer
@NathanDavis you can be on tennis games 🙄
@Alejandro3000 yeah, you can be and do anything you want, in your imagination... enjoy
@NathanDavis I enjoy winding you up xD
@Alejandro3000 I know that you think that you do... just following the crumbs
@Alejandro3000 you’re the only getting winded up, you’re just too delusional to see it lol
Federer wins 😊
@Alejandro3000 actually Nadal wins, most of the times
@NathanDavis you shouldn't choose injured players I see you're the type to get your excuses in early
@Alejandro3000 14 - 10
@NathanDavis Federer=1251 Grandslams, Nadal=1027 (says his body can't take it anymore, what a shame 😅) excuses excuses
@Alejandro3000 you should google up what Grand Slam means... and they both have 20, which are different from Masters and Nadal is ahead with 36.. and also different from overall wins in their careers... which, if you want to see by winning percentage rate, Nadal also comes ahead by nothing... 83% to 82% from Federer.
From my personal experience it doesn't and my friends bare the same we are all pretty chill and play some fuckin violent games
Nah. I have a lot of acquaintances that are gamers and they play all sorts of R-rated games. None of them are violent. So I don't know where this imaginary correlation comes from.
No because most these kids ain't in the street doing anything. They fat or super skinny. And people always say kids these days are pussy.
People in the 60s and below didn't need video games to kill
I don't think it makes people violent per se, but it anaesthetises people to behaviour which should be abhorrent. Society is becoming more violent, because it's everywhere, and we are becoming immune to it. It should be the most loathsome and hateful thing, yet it's everywhere you look.
I posted an article ages ago. I was hoping we would get over this myth by now.
The Truth about Sex and Violence in Video Games
The only console game I remember playing was Pacman, and I never felt an overwhelming need to go and eat dots and ghosts. So I'm going with no!
I don't think so.
Games only make our basic traits a little more obvious.
Where I believe to see that the dumbest games are made and also played by the dumber part of the population.
Video games make me throw turtle shells at other drivers
Bananans?
Those too
You sir are an ice cold killer 🤣
No, it does not make you violent. It says at the beginning of game this is for entertainment purposes. It’s fictional. People need to be able to separate the two. If you cannot, then you should not be playing video games.
I don’t think the video games alone cause violence. I think they already had some deep rooted unresolved mental issues if they suddenly become violent after becoming addicted to violent games because as other people have said, violence has been around since the beginning of time. Even if you believe in The Bible or ever read it, it’s stories of killings in there.
It does not, Studies have shown the opposite actually. Being able to take your anger out on a video game tends to make people less angry, less violent.
Nope, there is many studies that prove it don't. Only dumb bias conservative views on games try to proclaim as such. But anyone of actual intellect, who is open minded to research will find a clear answer it don't.
It makes you a boring person who cannot interact socially without a electronic device in your hand.
That is true 👍
If it did, I would have murdered probably a hundred of thousands people so far.
🤣 same here, maybe millions
No. People naturally recognize the difference between the game and reality.
I don't think so, my cousin is a COD addict and he is one of the most chills people alive. Dude can not even hurt a fly like literally.
No, because even children can grasp the concept of pretend being different from real life.
No but believing Trump's lies makes people violent :(
Does watching porn make you good at sex? Does playing Madden turn you into an NFL Coach?
No your in charge of yourself. If you decide to be violent that is on yourself not a game or a film. We are in charge of our own decisions and how we make those decisions.
No, immaturity makes you violent not your preferred source of entertainment
Multiple studies have shown the answer is NO.
That doesn't stop some people freaking out about them.
Games do not make you do anything. Nothing really does, it's how the person chooses to react to it. Humans are built for distruction apparently.
