What exactly does it mean to resign from the Academy?

Will Smith has announced he is resigning from the Academy.

I was reading online that he can no longer vote for the Oscars, but he's allowed to keep his Oscar, continue to be nominated and allowed to attend the ceremonies in the future. Are many actors members of the Academy?

It basically means that he personally cannot cast votes for awards.

He can still be nominated or awarded anything, and doesn't have to relinquish anything. He can and likely will continue to be an actor.

In other words, it basically means nothing except virtue signaling an image of remorse.

The more relevant, unspoken punishment is just the fact a lot of people will probably avoid or be more hesitant to see a Will Smith movie any time soon, and people making movies will see him as baggage until people forget about it. Let's be honest- Hollywood is a dumpsterfire of wackos that do dumb, weird, immature sh*t all the time, so that day will probably be sooner than you might think.

It doesn't really mean much. He can still act, be nominated, attend ceremonies, and win Oscar's. He can no longer vote for nominees. He's really just making a political statement that sounds important... but it's not.

There's just under 10k members of the academy. You have to be invited to join by the board of governors. Members have to be a part of 1 (and no more) of 17 branches including film, music, casting directors, cinematography, make-up artists and so on.

You can resign from the academy (as Will Smith did) and you can also be kicked out (Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein were), this means you can no longer vote for the Oscars and lose privileges such as being able to see new films weeks ahead of release.

He will probably give up his award and will not be eligible for future awards and will not be invited to the awards. Further producers and directors want to win they chose actors based on this in many ways. I see this as the beginning to the end of Will.

I believe he has done this knowing it was coming, and he wanted to look like it was his choice. And maybe minimize the damages. The Oscars can still and should rule on the incident. To do nothing sends a message they will allow this kind of violence!

Its a pre-emptive move, probably viewed by his brand advisors as less negative that waiting until the Academy governors remove him.

What it means to me is that the Academy are pathetic, clearly this is an attempt to put distance between the Academy and Will Smith because of what happened.
