Burn the World on Fire Metal? Doom Metal? Badass Metal?

In 1970, when I was 16, I went to see a band called Grand Funk Railroad. They were very popular at the time. There was a new band opening for them. We got into the auditorium just after the opening act had begun playing. I had NEVER heard a sound like that. Thunderous, galloping, dark. My friends and I were on our feet during their entire set. As it turned out, that band was Black Sabbath. They had just released their Paranoid album. We had never heard of them before.
We went out and bought Paranoid and their first album immediately and were addicted. Sabbath was the headliner from then on and I never missed one of their tours.
I was a metal fan from then on. A couple other progressive hard rock bands I liked were Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. I was a lead guitarist and vocalist through back then and played a lot of that kind of thing. So I love the guitar work on all the various kinds of metal music, but I also love the energy. The only thing that can't get into is a lot of the lyrics. I kinda like meaningful lyrics.
Here's a couple from back in the day:
This one by Led Zep isn't heavy metal, but it has the shredding guitar and energy that makes my big toe shoot up in my boot.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/3EH7QMVnSRIWow! I gave a sample listen to all of those and have added them all to a playlist! They all sound badass and give me a newer sense of appreciation for the history of metal. I like the cleaner vocals. My dream would be to combine that grungy sound of some of those I posted above with these cleaner vocals. The whole zombie voice thing is a bit over-the-top to me. But I like the dirtier and grungier sounds of the guitars. I want some kind of fusion of the two.
What do you think about this? I don't know how to describe it. It seems like metal to me, but not... ancient folk metal? :-D

Interesting. I really like ancient barbarian stuff, maybe because I'm of Celtic ancestry.
The song you posted wasn't melodic, but the vocals reminded me of some Tuvan or Mongolian throat singing. Here's an example. You can listen to the whole thing or start at 3:20 to see what style I mean.

I'm also reminded of didgeridoo music

THOSE ARE AWESOME! I wonder if I was Aborigene or Mongolian in a previous life! :-D EPIC!!
I would not be of much help... I tend to not focus on the types of genres and sub-genres which can go into the dozens upon dozens... lol
Same -- I seem to be all over the place genre-wise, and it's rare that I even like whole albums let alone artists. I'm a dabbling type cherry-picking all over the place.
however, since we{re about solutions... I would really recommend you to follow and check the wonderful, one and only @420Rachel and her many MyTakes posted on this very subject, all things metal and their subgenres
Heavy fucking metal on her cover -- sounds like a good source!
it definitely is
I tend to lean towards progressive metal, doom metal and classic metal from the 70s and 80s. I don't listen to much else.
