Do you think there needs to be more, less or are you happy with how it is?

Fine longs if not tokenism. There is a reason why south park has Token or should I say Tolkien lol. Much is tokenism though and also a lot of it is changing a story already set up for entire new meaning.
A good example is Candyman. The newest one was awful and why? Because it completely changed the story to a racism thing that clearly was just driven by the idea of cop kills a innocent black man. Was this what the original candyman was? Nope.
Is this the story of candyman? nope.
Was the script changed from an actual good plot that had a lot to do with the original which would even bring back the main actress of the original film once a black woman was hired to do whatever she wanted with the script, who then changed the whole story? Yup.

It was a disgrace. If she wanted to make a film like that give it a different name, be a different movie rather than mocking a franchise from it's original point. Then it would of been a fairly okay film still too nail on the head but shrugs people may of liked it for that. But the fact it was forced into a franchise that didn't need it was awful.
As I said myself to my father when we watched it, "Pretty sure the original is more just phantom of the opera, not cop killed a innocent man and candyman was a truly messed up and evil." it took me a couple mins to go over to IMDb to find a literal quote from Tony Todd himself saying "I wanted my own personal phantom of the opera." like... he achieved that in the original films so much I knew that before even knowing that quote from him.
by the way the original script that was changed was supposed to be the original actress coming back as candyman as a sequel to the first film because at the end of that film she becomes candyman herself. Which would of been a direct follow on from the ending to the first film and make perfect sense.
The easiest way to explain it is like if Phantom of the Opera got a remake and the only reason he became the phantom in the film was not because he was messed up and also disfigured, it's just because he was black and people were racist. That's just... not what Phantom of the Opera is.

I like it. There's a lot more stuff you can do with a story when not everybody looks and thinks and lives similarly. The same problem comes up when all the major characters in a show are the same income level, or the same religion/non-religion, or the same age. It limits both your problems and solutions. Throw a couple different characters in, and that multiplies the possibilities. (Compare IASIP with Friends. Even though neither are very racially diverse, there can be a lot more variety in IASIP because it has just 1 or 2 major characters who add diversity in other ways). Variety is the spice of life.

I am 100% a fan of it as long as it's done right. Don't just plug in the deaf character, or the black character, or the mentally disabled character without purpose. Shows like Switched at Birth or 9-1-1 Lonestar actually give these "inclusive" characters story lines, and lives, and personalities like *gasp* real human beings. No one can learn the value of another human being being portrayed if they are just there as a prop meant to smile and laugh and show up for group pictures. In fact, many actors put in this position have left shows, stating as much.

People who resist the above confuse me because these people exist in real life and they are all around you, so why shouldn't a movie or television show portray the reality even in fiction. A show like Friends for example, portrayed New York of all places, as this 98% white bubble. How does that even check? I don't want or need creative historical dramas where their is gender swapping and race swapping because we can't alter history no matter how much we may want that, but I do believe that tv and movies should reflect people as they are and as they exist and not just cater to only one set of people.

I want inclusivity but natural ones, not ones that yt male directors just put in without even caring about exploring the character identities or just using them for fake diversity without even bothering to analyze their character.

An example of this I can give is how in euphoria they dealt with Jules character very well and even sat down with the actor who is a trans woman herself about what direction she wanted the character to go in from her perspective as a trans women which made for a really authentic experience.

But for rue who in the show is biracial (white and black) but her racial identity is literally never explored even though it’d be interesting if they explored what it’s like to grow up mixed and visibly a racialized other within a small town filled with predominantly white people. But that wasn’t included which really sucked however rues experience with addiction in the show was handled extremely well paired with zendayas incredible acting skills and sam Levi son (the directors) personal experience battling addiction himself !

I'm bored of it always being white men and women. Give me Arabs. Give me Filipinos. Give me Balkans. Give me disabled people. Give me LGBTQ.

It's great seeing people like yourself on screen. If white people get butthurt because they're just used to Hallmark-esque monotony, well, they can watch the Hallmark channel and let the rest of the world (statistical majority) enjoy the mainstream media industry.

But seriously. You ever see a kid or old person from a marginalized community feel seen or represented on screen? It's a magical moment and whoever is against that needs to find themselves a heart. Seeing a wheelchair bound kid find representation in a positive way is powerful. Seeing queer kids represented is powerful. Seeing minorities represented is powerful.

Wouldn't expect white able bodied people to understand, though. They've always been represented.

I think it's a terrible path to go along with. Body inclusivity promotes unhealthy lifestyles. I'm not saying fat shaming is good, but people should encourage others to lose weight and stay fit. Not to be obese and not be able to walk 1 kilometre on a hike without dying and wanting to turn back.

Trans inclusivity is disgusting. It's unnatural. People should learn and be encouraged to accept themselves in their own bodies. And trans mental health is usually terrible after surgery.

I think a black little mermaid is dumb. Although I think Zendaya is cool, Mary Jane in spiderman was always portrayed as a white girl with red hair. Next they're gonna make a black Mulan the way things are going. I even saw some show where they portrayed Zeus and a bunch of other Greek gods to be black tribal people. I'm not racist, but I think that's just ridiculous. I immediately stopped watching.

This inclusivity trend is ruining everything.

It's fine when it's done right, which generally results in it being completely unnecessary to demand attention for "look how inclusive this is!" Most of the time however, an "inclusive" cast or story completely alienates the entire audience by revolving around jarringly out of place characters who's entire existence revolves around their victimhood or status as a chosen one.

So basically when it seemlessly contributes to the story in some way, it's good. When it's used as a platform to shoehorn a political agenda, it's bad.

It should IF it applies, nothing worse than watching some horror flick or a sci fi movie that has zero to do with it and they throw in some PC correct stuff that seems so out of place. Like really, that didn't even need to be there at all. Like having to show a gay couple when there is no romance or anything going on with straight people.

So it makes sense in a drama though or a romance to include them all, just not in something that has nothing to do with love or romance.

So it is good when it fits, bad when it seems out of place... but Hollywood is so busy pushing their agenda that they make crap, I don't watch anything anymore.

All I have ever cared about is telling high-quality stories. If diversity and inclusivity serve to tell a more rich story, then I support it. The problem is that many times, the diversity feels forced. You can't just insert racial tensions into a story for no reason besides checking a focus-group box. The entertainment industry doesn't realize that racial tensions aren't something most people experience on any regular basis. If you don't think race is a big deal, then you aren't going to be more invested in a story just because a character is a certain color.

Yet I think it's being done in a very heavy-handed way by people who don't actually have much social experience or empathy; it feels forced and in ways that cause the writing to suffer.

Forced inclusivity is shit. Especially when it goes one way.
At this point, shows look more like a list of stuff that has to be included than anything else. As if before even writing any story, they had to choose people to fit the different cases that HAS TO be included.
Can't have too many white people, must have a LGBT character, a black character, a strong woman, someone with a handicap, talk about bad police, talk about bad racist white people, etc etc.
And if they take an existing story, they have to replace existing characters by more "inclusive" characters. As a ginger I'm touched by this especially, because every ginger in every adapted story has been replaced by a black character.

For me it’s less the inclusivity that bothers me and more the poor writing that usually accompanies it. When you introduce a character and within minutes make them LGBT and they contribute nothing to the story except to check a box, I think they are self-sabotaging. They’ve crossed from inclusivity into overt political messaging and it’s just annoying.

Diversity for the sake of diversity in my opinion does more harm then good.

It's different if your writing a story based around a certain race or someone with an illness or whatever the case may be. But shoe horning different groups, races, etc into something is bad.

And you can definitely overdo diversity especially if you try to force it into a setting where it doesn't belong.

They have lots of advertisements featuring Black men coupled up with White women, but I see very few of White men with Asian women, and they definitely won't show a hot White man with an Asian woman.
