As for the hero and villain thing. We are always shown from the perspective of Jerry, like it's Jerry telling the story so we are supposed to be sympathetic. But look at the facts - Tom is just a cat, he's removing vermin, and just chases the mouse. Jerry is kind of a dick and a bit psychotic. There's no real winners in the story, but Jerry is definitely evil, twisted crazy evil who sees fun in torturing a cat.
