Yes. I got my first guitar when I was 11. I took some lessons and got my first electric guitar when I was 12. I kept taking lessons to learn basic chords and a few techniques.
I mainly practiced a lot and learned songs by buying song books and listening to music.

When I was 13 or so, I started playing pop music with kid bands.

By the time I reached high school, I had been trying to learn how to play guitar leads. I was getting pretty good. I started playing with different people in three man, garage, rock bands and started getting popular as a lead guitarist and vocalist. We played a lot of parties and some outdoor venues.

I took a couple semesters of music theory right after high school.

All the way through my early 30s, I was good enough to play stuff like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, UFO, Heart, Boston, Journey, etc.

I got too busy to be in bands and my guitar eventually went in a closet for 20 years. I started playing again in 2003 or so. The muscle memory for improvising shredding leads was gone, but I could still play. And I began to get my chops back with practice.

From about 2010 through 2019, I had a four man band with bass, drums, keyboards, and me on guitar and vocals. We were getting pretty good and played a few gigs.

At the same time, I played a variety of different music including folk, crooner, gospel, romance, 60's pop, blues, rock & roll, rock, Celtic, ...

Things fell apart with the covid terror campaign and mandates. So I haven't played now for 2.5 years.

She had to tune it first but never got to doing that :( I've seen in videos that some strings would snap, and I didn't want that on my conscience. I'm now downloading an mmorpg where I can play instruments, just because of this question 😂

And don’t go out and buy the shiniest guitar either! Some of them get very expensive, and don’t have great resale value. Stick with a basic guitar until you decide if it’s for you or not.
