Clarinet, Sax, Violin, Guitar? If locked in a room 6 months with only an instrument to busy yourself —which of these would you choose & WHY?

I'd pick electric guitar.
I'm not that crazy about clarinet. I don't know why. Too squeaky, I guess. Maybe it reminds me of klezmer music. Or maybe I'm thinking of an acquaintance who is a trained musician and plays the most God awful avant garde jazz.

Tenor sax can be great. It's very versatile. It can "make my big toe shoot up in my boot" - Little Ricard quote.
You can get great expression out of one if you have soul (I was going to say "balls"). I really love the raspy sound they can make. An example of that would be the solo in the song Money by Pink Floyd.

I'm not that much of fan of certain jazz. It can be like particularly annoying elevator music or endless noddling with no beat. But some jazz is fantastic and sax can kick ass.

I love the sound of a string section. And some solo violinists/fiddlers are amazing. I've seen and heard some who fill me with emotion. But I don't have a particular interest in learning it. I don't think I could ever make one sing or cry.

I always liked the guitar, especially electric. I was inspired by the Beatles when then emerged in 1964 when I was 10, but I loved the guitar way before then. This a song that came out when I was 6. The guitar work blew my mind.

I think it is one of the most versatile instruments. It can be made to sound close to acoustic and with effects can do crazy stuff. Think of Jimi Hendrix. He used effects to play multiple voices instead in needing to employ different instruments. Here's an example

An electric guitar can slide, strum, pick, play complex chords, whisper, squeak, cry, scream.

I really love the dynamics.

Plus, I already play the guitar and could use 6 months to learn some new chops. :-)

Maybe violin. Guitar would be a close second though. I always wanted to try violin. A violin has so much emotion.

My uncle played violin for the New York Philharmonic. His wife (my aunt by blood) was supposed to be better than him. But back in the early 1900s she didn't want to show up her husband so she quit playing. They were both into the NY music scene in the 1920s - 1950s. He looked like Richard Gere in Cotton Club, pencil mustache and all.

Clarinet and sax are too slobbery. Besides I don't have enough soul to play sax. A sax player who doesn't have soul ain't a sax player.

If piano was a choice that would be my pick.

Violin! I always wanted to learn to play the violin. I learned clarinet and sax. I dabbled with the guitar enough to play a simple song, but I really wanted to play the violin. 🎻

Guitar. Because nobody ever busted out a cool violin, clarinet or even saxophone solo like a guitar solo. Also because I've taken a couple forays into learning guitar. But never really committed myself to it. So I'd like to finally put that bucket list entry to rest.

I already play guitar, so I'd like to learn the violin. Once you can play fiddle, you can get work easily in a band because there are so few fiddle players.

a classical guitar... because to me, it would be the one with most range of expression (very arguably claim I know) but also because the sounds and vibrations of a guitar, the resonance to it especially, that's the one that would fulfill me the most, no doubt...

and I also think it would be the most intuitive? for me to TRY and learn to play by myself without actually never trying seriously to play any of these instruments before, lol

Saxophone. I love brass and the sax is the king of brass instruments. Also I already know that I suck at playing the guitar, the sax seems to have less buttons so maybe its easier?

Violin. If I'm locked in a room alone I'd want something challenging. All those other instruments listed above aren't. I also am aware that people hate hearing people practice violin so this would be perfect for me.

Guitar, because that's where my strongest musical skillset is. Been playing for about 40 years now. Would definitely get old at times but it would be easy to burn up LOTS of hours fine tuning some techniques etc...

Guitar. I know the basic chords and strings on the guitar. Roger Waters is probably the best musician Pink Floyd has ever had, written the lyrics to The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, and I reckon Animals, so He was IN Pink Floyd. He did fight with other members, I think.

Vivant I would choose guitar because that's the only instrument of those 4 that I play. But there's definitely something to be said for having 6 months of lockdown to learn an instrument you don't already play.

i know the basics of a violin so relearning it would be quite easy. i'd be playing out of tune after about a month though because i never learned to tune the instrument

Saxophone, I already know what I am doing. I probably wouldn't finish learning the other ones in six months. The Gunner's Dream was written by Waters while he was still part of the group so technically it is Pink Floyd. Very good song either way.
