What is the best way to end a story?

Comedic ending; marriage and resolution

Open ending; shows potential for more adventures (and potentially a sequel)

Sad ending; the heroes lose, the world goes on

Epilogue ending; shows the far future after the final battle

Unexpected. Like Edward James Olmos's idea for ending Galactica. They find Earth at the then present time and President George W Bush blows the fleet out of the sky. As the camera pans back, you see that one of his advisers congratulation him, a Six who is smiling.

Depends on the story. I think tragic endings are most often the ones that stick with people, but they're also the hardest to write. If it doesn't leave an impression, then it just makes the reader feel disappointed.

Two to the chest one to the head, then an admonishment to "stay dead this time."
