Have you ever actually been out at sea in the Caribbean? It's nowhere near as hot as you might think, especially outside of the summer peak. The uniformed crew of a naval ship more than likely had it worse, assuming they didn't waive a lot of standards when not at port.
The climates wernt as hot as now. Rubber wasn't invented yet so no rubber soles in shoes. Plus unless you were a high up person on boat (in navy). You only got 1 thing to wear. So if you had a rip or anything you had to fix it yourself. But if your 1-2-3 months at sea your options are limited for nessecities
