Although some were shirtless, barefoot or wore waistcoats (with nothing underneath), many others wore overcoats (dark ones), white shirts, waistcoats, trousers, heavy black boots, etc. And this was on hot islands.

And did any of them get heatstroke?

Have you ever actually been out at sea in the Caribbean? It's nowhere near as hot as you might think, especially outside of the summer peak. The uniformed crew of a naval ship more than likely had it worse, assuming they didn't waive a lot of standards when not at port.

The climates wernt as hot as now. Rubber wasn't invented yet so no rubber soles in shoes. Plus unless you were a high up person on boat (in navy). You only got 1 thing to wear. So if you had a rip or anything you had to fix it yourself. But if your 1-2-3 months at sea your options are limited for nessecities
