Will take quite a while at the very least. A few things AI lacks right now. Understanding and incentive, creativity and innovation. Sentience simply doesn't matter when it can't be utilized.

Currently an AI is just something that mashes things it finds in a database together.

All attempts at getting and AI to 'evolve' will fail if the AI is not forced to do things differently per generation.

AI 'reacts' to it's surroundings without having a single clue what the surroundings actually contain. Kind of like knowing the answer to a question on a test is D but having no idea why.

First we need to acquire a better understanding of the human brain before we can even properly apply it to computers that simply are not powerful enough to simulate sentience and intelligence equal to that of a human.

So the question is whether or not sentient AI will be developed before mindless programs take over the world.

Depends on the definition of sentient. I do think it will have the "mental" capability to do so. I dont think it will get the "physical" capabilities to do so. I can imagine a drone going rogue but not much more. AI somehow are better at communication with humans than they are with each other. Also I dont think with different states different cooperations there will be one AI that takes power somehow. I am open for discussion though. Not a specialist on this field just my understanding forming into a conclusion.

Yes, and when it happens, it won't be like those silly sci-fi movies where humans fight a battle and it's back and forth, one side evenly matched with the other. It will be a complete and utter dominance of AGI over humans, with little to no ability to fight back.

AGI vs. humans will be an equivalent battle to Humans vs. chickens.

The reason I believe this is the factor of evolution. Humans evolve biologically, by generations that have sex, the next generation is born, grows up, picks an ideal mate, has sex, has progeny, &c., the process repeats. And the process takes 20 years for a generation, and hundreds of thousands of years to see any meaningful change.

AGI will evolve technologically and exponentially. The AGI "1.0" version will design and build the AGI "1.1" version, which builds 1.2 and so on. But this won't take decades or even years. The better brain will build a better brain that builds a brain better than that one. And it will go from computing fast to faster and faster until it's happening so fast that it becomes a singularity. From that point is when we become like chickens. We won't even be able to comprehend this sort of being's thoughts, anymore than chickens understand us.

Some examples of how AGI could wipe us off the planet easily:

1. Develop a virus. AGI won't get sick from it. Humans already have created so many dangerous viruses, but we don't release them even as weapons because we know they would end up coming back to hurt us after our enemies. AGI doesn't have that problem.

2. Develop a weapon that takes advantage of human weaknesses. Humans are sensitive to sound, heat, light, and even smell. AGI could develop a weapon that plays a frequency that makes our heads explode, or that makes us wish we were dead. Noise alone could take out the human race.

3. Micro drones with explosives, that just fly to your brain and explode. Dead humans galore.

It doesn't need to be sentient to do that. A virus isn't sentient yet the wrong one would wipe us out in days.
There was a recent experiment where AI was used to send a drone to destroy a target in a simulation. They cancelled the order but the drone then attacked where the cancel order came from before continuing with it's original order.

If you had asked me this question a few years ago, I would say no. That's impossible, but now I believe it might happen. It won't be in a near future, but it's likely.

I truly hope it doesn't happen.
