His only crime was loving Belle and wanted to stop that hideous beast, who he and everyone else thought was a danger to the area. Does anyone else agree he wasn't a villain?

This is my favorite cartoon, so let me explain the details :) In Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," Gaston is generally portrayed as the antagonist, and whether he's a "bad guy" can depend on one's perspective and criteria for what makes someone bad. Here's a breakdown of his character:
Gaston is exceptionally vain and conceited, believing he deserves nothing but the best and is deserving of Belle's love based solely on his appearance and societal status. This sense of entitlement can be off-putting and is typically not a trait associated with 'good' characters.
Gaston attempts to manipulate Belle into marrying him, showing a clear disregard for her feelings and consent. He even goes as far as using her father, Maurice, as leverage by threatening to have him committed to an insane asylum. This is a form of emotional manipulation and blackmail, further painting him in a negative light. His aggressive and violent tendencies, especially highlighted in his determination to kill the Beast, show a lack of compassion and empathy. The Beast, at that point, was no longer a threat to Belle or anyone else. Gaston's actions were driven by jealousy, rivalry, and a desire to eliminate what he saw as competition.
Gaston incites fear and hysteria among the villagers to rally them to attack the Beast, showing his willingness to put others in harm's way for his own selfish gains. This exploitation demonstrates a lack of concern for the well-being of others.
Unlike some other Disney characters, Gaston does not go through a redemption arc. He doesn't learn from his mistakes or change his ways, which is often a key factor in evaluating a character's morality. However, some alternative or more in-depth interpretations of "Beauty and the Beast" might focus on Gaston as a product of toxic societal expectations. He embodies hypermasculinity and is adored by the villagers for his macho persona. This perspective can spark discussions about the societal pressures on individuals and how these expectations can lead to negative behaviors.
In summary, while Gaston does exhibit behaviors and attitudes that are commonly associated with "bad" individuals, such as selfishness, arrogance, and violence, there's also room for discussions about the societal influences that contribute to such behaviors. Still, in the context of the film's narrative, he serves as the antagonist opposing the protagonists, Belle and the Beast, and their journey towards love and understanding.
That is truly beautiful explained
He's definitely a villain.
You forgot the part where he took away her Dad and wanted him in the crazy house. Belle's Dad was a nice fella, not abusive in any way.
"This also gives Gaston a plan to blackmail Belle into marrying him, which is that he bribes Monsieur D'Arque, the owner of the local insane asylum, to lock up Maurice unless Belle agrees to marry Gaston."
Maurice is Belle's Dad.
He's also a narcissist, literally only caring about himself.
He's a villain.
He didn't love her, he wanted to fuck her and control her. He didn't even approve of her being able to read. :/
I haven't seen the movie in many years, but as I recall... The prince gets cursed by a witch for refusing to let her into his castle, despite only being a boy at the time, and then Belle's father gets lost in the woods and captured by the beast. His horse comes back without him, and she sets out to find him- bringing Gaston along to help would be the logical choice, but she doesn't like him (since he has the brains of a toadstool and she's a bookish nerd, but he wants to marry her anyway).
She trades places with her father, who goes back to the village to warn them about the beast- and possibly try to rescue Belle? It's been too long. She gets released somehow- I think her father got attacked by wolves, and she knew about it in some way?- and goes back to the village, where she shows proof that the beast is real, and Gaston throws them both in an insane asylum while he rallies an army to kill the beast. He fails and gets killed.
Now, if he assumed her father was nuts, and that she'd been enchanted or had Stockholm syndrome from the beast, then his actions DO make sense, but they're still those of a foolish dolt. The big villain, as far as I'm concerned, is the witch. I mean, what the hell? You punish the kid- well, okay, that's not GOOD, but he DID cast you out into the woods during the winter; that's pretty much a death sentence. But the castle staff are innocent.
He wasn’t a genuine villain but he was an arrogant prik that refused to admit he might be wrong and wasn’t worried about hurting the innocent to get what he wanted…so he was a kind of villain. I’d never invite him to my place for a drink.
I’ve worked with many guys like him. I have something called the “20 second rule”. When I greet a guy and he cannot go 20 seconds, without turning the whole conversation over to him and all him and everything about him… he’s a Gaston. I will have as little to do with him ever in the future.

What are u talking about he got her dad incarcerated and tried to blackmail her that if she didn't get with him he would go to the mad hospital and then rallied a mob to attack the castle because he was jelouse that Bella had feelings for the beast and got the village people marked he most certainly was the bad guy
a lot of characters are portrayed as hero's when they're not. Anna from frozen should be arrested for assault for punching Hans. If that was a man punching a woman they'd be uproar
He was a conservative, preventing women from reading and getting educated and reacted with violence to everything he didn't know.
Mysogyny knows no political party, race, or gender.
Yes... i guess, whats your point?
He didn't love her at all, and he treated her dad horribly. He was a genuinely bad person.
Really bad. Loving belle? She said no but he harassed her and worse.
No, in fact there are already several videos on YouTube on this subject, Gastón was just the typical simple man who is humiliated by a femoid, a femoid who later has sex with a criminal, in this case a kidnapper (the beast).
Simp man
“It’s not right for a woman to read”.
This is why I don’t think this profile is real.
He wasn't really a villain. He was trying to protect others.
bad or good.
disney's new movies will make him worst
that sounds fascinating and id share my opinion of gaston but alas i stopped watching cartoons when i hit puberty
You probably rooted for the Nazi's in ww2 as well. 😆😆😆
