I was in Sendai together with my wife when the 2011 Fukushima earthquake hit but I didn't get to see the tsunami, only the aftermath.

My wife and I slept in late in the hotel which was pretty far from the coast since we partied all night before. Then we woke up all hungover to the most epic earthquake (ceiling and walls were bending on our floor) and saw the flooding outside but I missed seeing anything of the initial tidal waves except on the news later.

Also it completed flooded the Sendai airport and caused the trains to stop operating so we had to walk for hours and hours to get back home. That was really annoying.

I always had dreams about tidal waves though. I found them beautiful in a way, swallowing everything up in water. I used to constantly dream of them in a boy like sitting in a building next to the sea and seeing a rise wave so high that it blotted out the sun and smashed through the windows killing us all. Yet I missed my chance to see the actual thing with the ones in Sendai and slept through it.

I guess I'm lucky in a way not to have seen it since if I was close enough to see it, I might have been killed by it. Yet I always wanted to see one since I was a boy. They're very popular in Japan and I saw lots of images of tsunamis since I was a boy, like the famous Hokusai painting:

I think that's why I always had dreams about it.

Well, actually I have dreams about water a lot in general, not just tsunamis. Like dreams about lakes, waterfalls, rain. Water seems to be a recurring theme in my dreams. But tsunamis are included a lot.

Wow!! Here in Italy where I live during the summer we often experience very high waves at times. It must have been an amazing experience to witness the aftermath of a tidal wave. I too often dream about water a lot. I guess its common with sensitive and emotional people. Thank you for sharing!! I love the painting!!

Did you get to see one yourself in Italy? I always wanted to go to Italy. I have a colleague from Rome and he always tells me about Italy and he's also the most extreme food critic of any Italian food. I once bought him American instant Macaroni & Cheese as a joke present for his Birthday (although I also got him a real present). 😅

Ah yes... we Italians can be a little picky about food!!😄 In my case I can say I am very picky because my father was an Italian chef and I grew up in my parents restaurant where he cooked so I can very well understand your Italian friend. American food to us isn't very appealing and we view cooking and food sacred and a ritual meaning that unless food is cooked from fresh ingredients its not real food to us!! Italy is truly s beautiful country and although I am not sure that the big waves I have seen here are tidal waves I have always been of the opinion that they get pretty close. I used to swim in rough sea and I always enjoyed swimming against the current of the strong high waves. I hope you get round to visiting. There's nothing like the beautiful authentic natural landscapes that make Italy what it is.

I didn't realize there was a sacred aspect to it! I feel a bit guilty now since it is running teasing between my colleague and me about how much of a food critic he can be.

There is a popular spaghetti here in Japan called Spaghetti Naporitan. It sounds fancy and named after Naples but it is actually just spaghetti fried in ketchup. My colleague really hates that. 😅

I also loving swimming in the sea! I have this memory as a little boy when I was playing on the beach and a massive wave crashed over me and knocked me down. Then my parents rushed to me asking me if I was okay and worried but I was like, "Wow, that was totally awesome!" 😁

Unfortunately I got stung badly by jellyfish one time while swimming deep off the coast of Malaysia. I've always been a little bit uncomfortable about swimming in the sea ever since now knowing what lurks beneath although I still enjoy it.

Italy is definitely on my bucket list! Actually my colleague invited my wife and me to stay at his place in Rome. We might have to take him up on the offer.

Well I guess the spaghetti dish you speak of would be scorned by your average Italian person because there are certain rules that run deep in the culinary italian tradition and fried spaghetti would be a definite No No!😄 but for me personally, seeing that I am open minded even in food, the dish you showed me looks appetising. And I am of the opinion that you have to try something before jumping to conclusions and even if you don't have it ever again at least you've tried. That said I'd probably try it on one condition: no ketchup!!

I had the exact same experience swimming in the sea. I was stung three times on the same occasion by jelly fish. And ever since I am very weary and I will only swim in clear calm sea where I can see what's underneath.

The ketchup might be the most central part! 😅 Although it doesn't taste to sweet with the sausage and peppers. It's actually an extremely simple dish, so easy to make at home:

Jelly fish are definitely nasty! I forgot what species stung me exactly in Malaysia as a boy but they had to inject antivenin into my legs at the hospital and I couldn't walk for weeks. I got the lacerations around the inner ankles which seemed to be a sensitive spot.

Ouch!! My stings were relatively mild compared to yours... I just had to put antiseptic cream over them but they flared up often causing a lot of discomfort and irritation and they marked my skin for months.

The fried spaghetti I might try on a day when I'm feeling daring..😊

It's funny, how many people associate a tsumami with tides.
My workplace is a boatyard right at the sea: I see tidal waves each single day :)
As for tsumamis: once only, but it was far from the epicentre, and quite harmless.

Yes loads of times, A tidal wave is a shallow water wave caused by the gravitational interactions between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. it is not a Tsunami

As others have pointed out a tidal wave is caused by the pull of the moon. All tides are tidal waves. We've got very big tides here and you can often see them as they race up rivers. The severn bore is the most famous but I've seen them in small tidal streams

Never seen a tsunami in person. I've seen several videos. A tsunami can be very destructive.

A tsunami or a tidal wave? See tidal waves every day, but we haven’t had a tsunami here in a very long time if ever
