Have you ever seen sand glow beneath your feet at the beach?

It’s rare, but sometimes the sand at the beach will literally glow green/blue around your feet.

What can cause this is luminescent marine bacteria. Sometimes sand fleas will get infested and burrow beneath the sand so that when you step on the sand above, it lights up around your foot. It’s like dancing on light.

I’m not sure what location it frequently occurs. I know I saw it off on a sand bar off the coast of Florida on the Atlantic side.

We couldn’t predict when it occurred. Actually, there are a number of neat coastal phenomena that seem to occur at random. I remember when the intertidal zone was replete with minnows. The water shimmered so much from their wriggling bodies.

I think this is in the Maldives. I never knew that this happened in Florida. Way closer than the Maldives.

No. I'd never even heard of that. You know, for all the horrors bioengineering is going to bring to the future, you'd think we'd have more things be bioluminescent. Apparently, it's pretty simple, genetically. And if we could control it, think of the potential for communication!

It happens in the uk too around spring time but you've got to be on the right beach at the right time. Sadly I've never seen it

It may be caused by microscopic organisms that have fluorescent properties. I have never seen it but it would be awesome

I saw the red tide about 13 years ago at the pier. You could see the fish and sea lions swimming around in the water at night. It was pretty cool
