When film was first invented in late Victorian Times the upper class avoided movies considering them vulgar. By about WWI it became acceptable for the bourgeois to go to the cinema. Now since the rise of streaming it seems like it is mostly just the bourgeois who go to movie theaters anymore. I live in a small American city and all the theaters around me seem to be either Arthouse or Luxury cinemas.

Movie attendance has been falling for decades, and theaters have invested into improving the experience to try to keep drawing crowds. And while better sound and better seats and better food all help, they don't address the REAL issues that keep people away from the theater:
high cost (including food/drinks)
increasingly worse movies
in some places, problematic audience members (loud, on their phone, fighting, making a mess, etc.)
being less competitive with good home theater setups
I will not be surprised if we lose an entire major theater chain this year - possibly more than one. There will be so few releases, and most of them are going to be terrible, and I'm not sure how the theaters will survive. Hollywood has cut its own throat.
