For me, it was when I discovered progressive rock and jazz fusion. My musical scope and vision was expanded by 1000%.

When I was in college I started hearing music symphonies in my head as I was falling asleep periodically. Not frequently but it happens. Also sometimes when I hear a guitar, if I close my eyes I see colors. I can't make sense out of it and I've never tried to write or play an instrument (outside of elementary school). Around this time if i hear a song once, that isn't mumbling or screaming, where the words are clear, I can memorize a song. Sometimes twice if I'm not paying attention. I have no idea what this means. I wanted to play the guitar as a kid but my parents wouldn't let me. They didn't like the noise. I could have been Slash. Thanks mom and dad lol

Mine did once I learned how to play classical guitar reasonably well. It kind of ruined music in a sense for me though because I found myself no longer enjoying the hard rock bands that I used to love, and found myself really enjoying intricate compositions like those made by John Williams or Hans Zimmer. I think mainly it's because of the simplicity and seeming lack of passion of the former and the level of complexity and the emotion put into the music in the latter.

I didn't know much about music until each of my kids played in their school band and orchestra. I've learned a lot through them.

I am a classically trained pianist, learning guitar, I used to read, but learning pieces of music from listening to records and CDs has ruined that for me.
