I could only take so much of this guy, so I did not listen to his whole talk. He was talking about people liking certain types of music over time. Saying that what was liked changed and what was not the latest thing disappeared. One need only listen to church music to hear that much of that music has been around for hundreds of years.

And way back whenever, it was played on real instruments. For a small church the organ was able to replicate the sounds of the real instruments at much less cost, though many large churches still often have orchestras perform for special times.

We have had Moog synthesizers perfectly replicate the waveforms of most instruments (so that sounds like real instruments) as well as being able to distort those waveforms.

The style of music changes, but often uses real instruments. Music is so important to people that so many people play instruments to create that music. If people lose the ability to know what a real instruments sounds like, the world will be a much sadder place.

I think that's already happening. Some listeners won't even care what exactly they're listening to, if was created by a computer algorithm or if some human being actually put in the effort of learning notes and scales and put it all together. We'll probably reach a point where money is going to dictate everything and be the decisive factor: if it costs less to have a computer create music than to have a skilled artist in the studio, someone is going to do a quick math and offset cost versus income.

Luckily, there are still musicians out there, classically trained or not.

Most probably that anyone that is bone after 2010 and that is into electronic noise - that’s what I call modern music- has probably no idea what a bassoon, an oboe, a harp or even cello sounds like.


You have to be into classical music or music from the 1940’s to the late 1980’s, before rap and other cacophony sound to know what a trumpet, clarinet or saxophone sounds like.


Synthesisers were not yet dictating the sound produced by the music industry. Most composers nowadays have never played a real music instruments or attended something that is called a conservatory or music school. When I make reference to a conservatory, I am not talking about a green house

My daughter is learning to play a classical instrument at a conservatory, so we'll have trained musicians for years to come. Hopefully generations. But they're a minority.

It's gonna be a long time. Here in the US, bands and orchestras start in elementary school (around 5th grade) and are even more popular in high school. Most cities have an orchestra that has several concerts a year.

Granted, live music isn't as popular as it was years ago, but it is far from dead.

Plus, maybe people don't realize this, most soundtracks for movies are still done with live musicians.

Great question Nikki. As a "core" subject teacher I will ALWAYS defend the arts. They're just as important as any other endeavor to make a well rounded person. My kids act, paint, sculpt, design, sing, play instruments, write, etc. It's just too important.

As long as I am alive, they will know what a piano and organ sound like. I DO have a CASIO keyboard for some auxiliary stuff as well. My oldest grandson is becoming quite a drummer, made lead in his TN HS band, and is the drummer at their church. His younger brother is going well on piano- much better at memorization than I was in my early years on keyboard.

Totally, and it drives me crazy. People think what they are hearing through their phone is the full sound of a recording, but they are only getting 25%, maybe not even that much.

Lotta interesting theories on this. I think bone conduction and the new touch technologies wil give a whole new experience for music listening within 5 years. Music that literally grabs and makes you feel held or poked. Possibly groped but there'd be a restricted version for that.

Not long at all. Most people dont even know that todays music isn't played at the correct frequency anymore. Humans are very easily influenced. Human are easier to hurtle then most farm animals are
