How can I make my art pretty but not too overdone or busy?

Find artists whose work you like and study their work. See what they do to create the things you are trying to emulate. Art doesn't need to be nice. Sometimes it is deliberately disturbing ( if you live near NY I believe they have Picasso's "Guernica" still hanging. He painted it during Franco's invasion of his own country and Guernica is a small Spanish town he bombed. Picasso rearely strove to make art "nice", he tried to make it provocative. (by the way, I'm sure you could see a re-print of his painting online). This particular painting was more chaotic and fragmented than much of his work and it was supposed to be as it was portraying a bombed city.
