I had never heard of this composer. Looking him up on Wikipedia, I find that he won 2 Oscars and was involved in over 400 films, many of them Italian westerns.

This piece is for the 1967 film l'Avventuriero (internationally released as The Rover), a sad tale of Napoleonic times, based on the 1923 novel The Rover, which effectively is a retelling of the Greek mythology story Acis and Galatea.

This piece is depressing, but I guess it goes well with the theme and plot of the movie.
