Why are so many professional creatives depressed?

You would think getting paid to paint flowers or write books about amulets and tiaras would be great. But these people have extremely high rates of depression and substance abuse.

Because 99% of them are not as good as they think they are. I was looking in a shop last Saturday run by a local artist and the "art work" costs hundreds. Problem is its been in the window all year at least and seen by tens of thousands of passers-bys. That's a hell of a lot of rejection. You might think your squiggle is a masterpiece worth a small fortune but when countless people walk by and say "I wouldn't pay a fiver for that" then it's going to get to you mentally.
