Your Snoh Aalegra pick is so smooth, very late-night-drive vibes.

One of my favorites is Jeff Buckley’s cover of “Hallelujah.” Leonard Cohen’s original is poetic, but Buckley turns it into this raw, intimate confession. Also adore Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” and Johnny Cash’s “Hurt.” They all feel like completely new songs 💿✨

This was originally a Trent Reznor song and it wasn't even Mr. Cash's idea to do it, it was Rick Rubin's. But Johnny quickly got on board with it as he felt it was deeply emotional and a fitting goodbye for the man in black. And I think it resonates because we all can relate to certain parts of it as loss and regret are universal.

Reznor was originally not happy that Cash was covering the song, and then he listened to it. He was overwhelmed, and he now considers it to be Johnny's song. He felt so humbled by Johnny's interpretation that he feels that he was just channeling the song for Johnny.

@MrOracle really? See, I heard different. I was told that Cash's people contacted Reznor's manager and Reznor's manager said Cash would have to pay a lot for usage of the song. And this got back to Trent and he got mad and told his manager to give him usage of the song.

Artists don't need to get permission to cover other artist's songs, they just have to credit the writers correctly. Many artists still ask for permission out of respect, but it is not required.

Reznor definitely got paid for the cover, as he was the sole writer, and I believe also owns the publishing, so Johnny's cover made him some good money, but Reznor was already wealthy by then and it was more about musical integrity to him. At first he didn't understand how a country singer could cover that song, but once he actually heard it, he was deeply moved and has admitted that he was completely wrong.

He said that while the song was meaningful to him when he wrote it in his late 20s, having it sung by Cash during his last days made his own take seem petty and insignificant. That's why he now considers it to be Johnny's song.

You know what I really like for some reason is the new AI generated fake music because I love the music and it the tone, the rhythm and I like the gravelly old voice of the old man doing it, but right now, that's the type of beat and rhythm that I really like. In some cases but, mostly, I like thew originals.
We used to do a ska version of, "Midnight Hour" that I liked a lot.
I actually prefer the devo version of, "Satisfaction" and the Flying Lizards versions of, "Summertime Blues" and, "Money", also the Blue Cheer version of, "Summertime Blues". Todd Rundgren's cover of, "Good Vibrations" is almost note for note perfect!! I also like Cheap Trick's version of, "Don't Be Cruel", especially the video version.

I love covers. I love the original song that was covered in your post. I hate the cover. It's terrible. It does nothing to enhance the original and it's just plain bad. But.
