I can already picture them all waddling out to their backyards, adorning themselves in those grease-stained aprons. They wield their little metal tongs like scepters, staring down at a pile of cheap charcoal as if they are high priests presiding over a sacred altar.
Leviticus 1:9 dictates: "And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar, as a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord." 📜
But there is nothing pleasing about the processed, pink sludge these men buy wrapped in cellophane from a fluorescent-lit supermarket. They don't even know the name of the beast they are devouring. They didn't hear as its final, blood-choked breath rattled through a severed windpipe, spraying a warm, copper-scented mist across their face while the life slowly went dim in its glassy, rolling eyes.
I was up at four this morning. Prepared spring lambs to be prepared for the solstice feast. I know the smell of true, hot blood hitting the cold Wisconsin dirt. I looked into their wide, dumb eyes as I drew the blade across their throats 🔪, and I felt the warmth of their life draining out over my hands. It takes a steady hand to butcher properly, but none of these men have steady hands. Their hands are soft, uncalloused, and busy typing desperate messages into the void.
So, I pose this question to the forum: Are the men of the internet going to pretend they are masters of the flame by charring sad, symmetrical meat-pucks today, or will they surrender to their true nature and just have someone deliver Ole Time Barbecue while they hide indoors from the sun?
