How come foreign series aren’t popular in the US?

With a few counted exceptions like Casa de Papel a few years ago, how come series in other languages aren’t popular at all in the US? I guess K-Dramas have a bit of a public though but they’re way more popular in Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America. Same with Turkish series which are super popular around the world.

Most Americans grew up with dubbed anime at best, so reading subtitles still feels like “work” to many. Hollywood dominates the local market, so foreign series rarely get prime promotion or good time slots.

Streaming changed things a bit: K‑dramas, La Casa de Papel, Dark, Squid Game proved that when platforms actually push them, people watch. But they still fight against language bias, low marketing, and the idea that “if it’s not in English, it’s niche.” 🎬📺

I don't think a lot of people here would want to watch something in subtitles is my guess. There are a couple Canadian shows that are popular around where I live (close to Canada). Naturally, they are in English, tho.

Most Americans don’t like to read subtitles, many aren’t interested in other cultures and think what the U. S. makes is the best anyway. Small world view.

Could be because so many US series are produced in the US, so maybe the channels distributing TV shows consider audience to be too busy for imported shows?

Because they are on tik tok all day. The movies they put out in the US repeat the same lines 5 or 6 times because they know they will lose their attention and type on their phone.
