Is it time to ditch streaming and bring back physical CDs and vinyl?

Hey everyone, I was watching a podcast interview with an independent artist talking about ownership, and it completely blew my mind. They were talking about how streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music have completely ruined how we appreciate music because we don't actually own anything anymore—we’re just paying monthly "rent" to listen to our favorite tracks. On top of that, Spotify and Apple Music barely pay the artist anything, with streaming payouts drying up so badly that creators can barely survive off digital plays alone while corporate tech giants divide up all the profits.

They even pointed out how digital files can literally be swapped out or changed overnight without our permission (like I heard what happened of a viral TikTok EDM song cloned an AI voice and the platforms completely changed the track on people's downloaded playlists). If your phone dies, your password gets lost, or a platform deletes an album, your entire music history is just gone.

It made me remember how different it felt saving up to buy a physical CD or vinyl record growing up. You stood on line, looked at the lyric booklet, and listened to it front-to-back until it skipped because it was yours. Now, because of streaming convenience, people just listen to an album for a weekend and immediately move on to the next trend.

Do you guys think physical media needs to make a massive comeback so we can actually own our music, support artists directly, and appreciate the art form again? Or are we too dependent on the convenience of streaming to ever care about physical copies?

Every current artist is available on CD, DVD and vinyl (and cassette). People can buy what they want; most choose streaming. And recording artists get paid more from streaming than any other platform, and adjusted for inflation, more than any other platform that has ever existed.

Streaming is great for casual convenience, but physical copies are about actual ownership, direct support, and protecting the permanence of the art form itself!

It is, streaming just doesn't have as good of quality that CD's do, and with physical media there is no risk of waking up one morning and you're favorite song is gone. Sometimes, Vinyl has better quality then it's CD counter part, it's not that Vinyl is a superior format, but usually Vinyl's are produced using different masters that are superior. I never got into streaming music, I've always purchased the CD then convert it to a lossless audio file that I keep on my phone.

I like CD's and they always worked for me - they're easy. But buying them, or just about anything anymore isn't easy.

I had a big vinyl album collection until 2015 when a tradegy struck and my entire collection was gone.😞

But vinyl record album weren't very expensive back then like they are now.

Amazon and eBay is you're friend for buying CD's, that's where I buy mine from since in store purchasing is slim picking these days.

I have a few CDs at home but I prefer music platform because a phone is easy to carry around to listen to music
At the same time if you are not a collector is better to listen to music through phone , you have everything there and it is more affordable that buying cds.
I am part of the genZ, probably I am not able to understand the importance of CDs because they gradually disappeared while I was growing up.

Plus, streaming platforms barely pay independent artists anything, so buying a physical copy is becoming a way to actually support the creators directly.
