Can music CDs go back?

We were traveling down "America's Loneliest Road" and there were no radio stations, so I put on a Deep Purple cd and it wouldn't play at all at first, neither would another CD, but then it finally played, BUT... some of the songs were playing perfectly, others were jamming/skipping. We then tried the other CD again, and it played fine. I bought the Deep Purple CD like maybe 20 years ago, but other CDs that I've had longer played fine BEFORE, but I didn't try any of the others yet. I'm wondering if it's the CD or the car radio.

Multiple other CDs at my house also did this. But could the car radio have gotten damaged when my dad drove into a rock a few weeks ago😂

CDs don't last forever. If you kept them in your hot car they will go bad pretty quickly. The best way to store them is in a cool dry place. If you record your own CDs, get good quality CDs if you want them to last.

You can try copying those bad CDs on a good quality CD player. With error correction, and some playing around, you might be able to extract a perfect copy.

I have all my CDs backed up on multiple hard drives. So I have the original CD, plus at least two more copies. I use a lossless format to burn them to the HD. I also have a copy on thumb drives. Those are not a lossless format, but it gives me one more copy just in case.

This is possible also. Some CD drives are much better at reading the CD than others. Try it on a few different drives.

You can also resurface CDs, but that can get expensive if you pay someone to do it. There are cheap resurfacing machines out there, but I don't know if I'd trust them. The good ones cost several hundred dollars.

There are other problems besides scratched surfaces though. The recording media itself can go bad.

CDs generally last less than 10 years. The sound is just a metallic coating on the plastic disc. Just play songs on your phone through a bluetooth speaker.

CD's sre obsolete so I have none ever go bad. They do get scratches on them that can cause problems or even a dirt build up can cause problems.
