Trying writing prompts.
>> Prompt: Beginners tend to overuse dramatic dialogue tags. Try writing some dialogue using only 'said' or 'asked' in a scene where your character is discussing their favorite food.
"I HATE PINEAPPLES ON PIZZA!" she said with a normal dialogue tag in a dystopian cyberpunk universe—featuring a series of cyber-killings and a homicide detective who found his only remaining comfort in a glass of Scotch and women whose names he'd forget the next day; his name was Blade, Jack Blade: a cybernetically-enhanced being originally designed as a special operative unit for tactical assassinations (S. O. U.4. T. A.); nonetheless, the decisive end of the Galaxian Wars resulted in his reassignment to the homicide unit where he spent his days staring death in the eye; and, despite his neuro-auditory enhancements, years of exposure to harmful pollutants caused Jack and most other Earthlings to suffer diminished hearing (a consequence of the Great Atmospheric Degeneration, during which the unchecked venting of particulate neurotoxins by the hyper-industrial conglomerates oversaturated the troposphere, permanently altering the biological baseline of many living organisms and rendering organic auditory drums far less sensitive to lower frequencies of sound)—a universe where normal speech involved aggressively shouting a lot, and that's why a normal dialogue tag sufficed for a transcript of what she said.
