It's not that I don't love having a sister, there's just something about the brother/sister relationship that is appealing. I thought I'd never get to experience that, but going away to university proved me wrong.
When you're away from home, friends become family. Of course, I had my female roommates, who quickly became like my sisters. But then I met a guy. At first I liked him -- as in, liked him, liked him. He was sweet, funny, and we had so much in common. When I found out he was gay, I was disappointed. Not because I have anything against gays, but because I realized he'd never be my boyfriend. After a while, I came to realize that I was being selfish to be disappointed in who he was because I wanted him as my boyfriend. So I came to the conclusion: Why couldn't he be my little brother?
We we argue like brother and sister. If you ask our friends, they'll tell you that we're always fighting about something (but the fights never last). I try to protect him and care for him, even if it's something as simple as telling him he needs to go to sleep when he can hardly stay awake and has class in the morning. I listen when he talks, and try to get him out of messes just as I help my sister. We love each other, but not in a romantic way, and that's okay with me now.
He's no longer just my friend, but my family. My little brother. The little brother I've never had, but always wanted. And the best part is that friends come and go, but family is for life. No matter where life takes us, he'll always be stuck with me as a big sister. And however much he might get on my nerves (I mean this in a loving way), he'll always be my little brother.
