If one day you realise your internet friends lie to you... what would you do?

Since some of you have close gag friends or online friends whom you thought are geninue to you; what if one day you realise they actually lie about some aspects of their life to you?

You may think of any lie, it can be their name, their occupation, their country or city of residence.

I had two online friends that did that.
Honestly didn't really bother me much.
I considered them my best friends.
One lied about her age, pic, and boyfriend (It was super obvious that she'd get on and pretend to be him, lmao) and the other lied about his real name. Which I never believed anyways. He lied about some other stuff too, but I didn't care.
Oh! And another that I knew since I was 11. I met him in an online chat, lmao. He lied and said he was older when he was a couple months younger.

If it's a small lie I don't particularly care. If it's a big lie or series of lies I lose patience with them and cut them out.

Someone I know recently pulled the "omg I'm super suicidal and you're the only ones who I can talk to because I don't like my therapist and I uh can't talk to the hotline people. Yeaaah" Uh-huh yep that's totally a thing that's happening. Bye.

if it was their job or something... I wouldn't be too bothered, unless they went into a lot of detail and built up a huge Web of lies... that's just nuts lol

But if it was a big one, then I'd instantly just cut contact
as the person I called my friend doesn't exist

I've read a ton of the responses, and i'm not going to lie. I feel kinda stupid now.

I recently had a really close (as close as online friends get, anyway) friend who I kinda discovered lied. It was really big though. I mean, most people are a different version of themself online, but this friend's particular brand of self-invention was at the expense of others. She borrowed people's trauma, she lied about everything, and she even created an entire other fake mutual to manipulate people into saying things and what not. It was really messy, and honestly, I was and am really hurt.

So many people on here are brushing it off like, 'Yeah, people lie, i just unfollow.' But I don't know. This was just really bad. And really sad. And it's in a very close-knit community too, so I have to watch her lie to others. I've told some people, but I just can't tell everyone.

It's a really say "It is what it is" and "What's done is done" kind of situation. I really liked her. Maybe I'm just extra emotional. Huh.

I remember in the 90's we would be sitting around in the lab bored and co-workers sitting right next to you would login and do that shit. If you think the trolls are bad now, it was way worse :)

Nothing at all, hell what can you do besides block them, even then I wouldn't do that. I'm going to ask them to reveal the truth and if the couldn't cool. Depending on what type friends that we were I might just quit fucking with them overall BUT if it's something like Xbox live who cares as long as they're good at games lol

It depends about what they had lied and if I assumed it was with bad intentions.
If somebody lies to me about something that's embarrassing, than confesses that, I wouldn't be shocked. I'd be happy he or she decided to trust me.
But as many said, I'm very vigilant :-)

I don't think anybody (online friends) influence the decisions of my real life. So I won't mind and I don't trust or better say rely on the people that easy. If I catch anybody lying then it's their own loss. They will lose the faith of an enthusiastic friendly person.

It depends on the lie, I suppose. I've been lied to by a close friend of mine. He gave his reasoning he was ashamed of a part of his life. He thought if I knew it would drive me away. But I understood why he lied. If they were a completely different person then I wouldn't tolerate it, I'd just avoid this person.

I've had close online friends before. Some admitted they were lying and others I've figured out they were. Even I lied about myself once. It went in for 10 months but I told everyone the truth and they all were still my friends. So if they admitted they were lying i would still talk to them depending on what they lied about. But if I know they're lying and they still won't admit and they go on deceiving people then I would just stop talking to them

Anyone can say anything on the internet, you just have to be good at sniffing out the lies. And if you do find out that you were being lied to, the good news is that, they are on the internet!! its as simple as hitting a button and they are out.

I was having an online relationship with this woman on here. I found out she lied to me about everything after she ran away by playing a drama with her mother. Name, addresses, numbers... all were fake. Tho she was too dumb, as I could find her true details. I could find her details way earlier, I believe her, as I didn't think someone could be that much dumb. Because she should know I could find her even if she lied to me with the things she told to me.
