My housemate's bedroom literally smells like a homeless person?

You know that really distinct smell, I don't even know what it is - but only homeless people smell like that. Well I had never actually been in or seen his room until a few days ago. That night, he left his door open by mistake before he went out somewhere. I had to go in there to get the cats out and close the door so they couldn't get in (his window was open and they are indoor cats). I literally felt sick just standing in there from the smell.

He has bipolar and I'm sure he's going through a depression cycle at the moment as he has hardly left his room the past couple of weeks.

what the hell is causing that smell I didn't think anything other than a homeless person could smell like that?

It could be any of these things:

His room is full of dirty clothes.

He has never changed his bed sheets or doesn't change them enough

He goes to bed without showering too often.

Leaves wet towels in there

He pissed his bed

The cats pissed all over his bed and room

He's a compulsive wanker who leaves cum tissues all under his bed or in his bed or just does it directly into the sheets and doesn't change them.

Probably because he doesn't leave his room. The b. o. Permeates everything. Does he do laundry, wash his sheets? Masturbate a lot (ewww) maybe spray febreeze in there when he's not around or offer to do some laundry for him while doing yours.

It's probably old pieces of food and dirty clothes combined. You're right, depression cause lazyness, and lack of will to be tidy and clean.
