I live with my parents, and I don't find it shameful as long as your not deliberately freeloading on them and the parents don't find it bad. Not everybody is marrying young anymore, it's harder to find jobs, college is extremely expensive, people can't even get out of loans anymore, hard to even QUALIFY for loans, or benefits, or any of your basic needs to survive. This is the 21st century as many now want to call it. It is not the 20th century anymore or before the 80s, where you can just go to the store and apply for jobs, or when college was readily available and cheaper, when housing was affordable, etc. People better wake up to the 'times' and actually have compassion for people. I never would have dreamed I would still be home. I expected to be out by at least 21, overseas and living my life. Didn't happen. Life happened.

+1 yTbh, I am from India and many students after completing their 12th, they leave their home, I mean not completely as in they have completely cut off themselves from their parents or they earn their own money. Their parents pay their fees and if their is a holiday, they will come and live with their parents only. They do internships in college and I was also one of them who wanted to go out of my hometown and wanted to live alone, pay my expenses but I am living with my parents and I am doing my graduation from my hometown. I am happy to pursue it from here and Living with your family is not at all a bad idea.. I am not at all ashamed.. instead I am proud that I am getting a chance to spend time with my family.. I am truly staying connected to my family values which I think nobody should ever feel ashamed of!

why is he ashamed of you.. just talk to him and you guys need to smooth out your differences.. because no parent should be ashamed of their kid. And you should also for a second feel ashamed of yourself who you are

My little brother is the only one still living with your parents, even after our little sister moved out and our mother recommended him to finally move out since he already found a job. But all he says is "you need someone to take care of you once you're old", which is basically what the youngest of my mother's brothers did, even way after first their father then their mother died, 13 years ago.

Asker+1 yYour little brother is such a sweetheart❤
As long as you’re working and paying rent, I don’t see a problem with it. What sense does it make to move out young and struggle to live, paying for a place you can barely afford? As long as you’re welcome to stay home and you’re working hard, it isn’t something to be ashamed of.

Asker+1 yI neither work nor pay rent
Yes and when I say yes believe me because it is coming from a person who is from South Asia.
I went for higher education after 18 after which I worked for a year there, later shifted and started staying with my parents. People might think it's weird but here it's not and here where I am from parents wants us to be with them.
I see nothing wrong in that I can take care of them as they are getting older.16 Reply
Asker+1 yMy dad keeps saying rude things about me living with them:(
Asker+1 yLike he is proud of my brother who lives on his own but he is ashamed of me. I should live on my own by now etc
- +1 y
May be it's a thing or a part of growing up from where you're. I can't relate to it but I know how you feel for example in India if i get lower grades I would face the same thing and I did face them. My parents used to compare me with others who were better than me and it was really sad.
However, parents should never compare their child with someone else as it depresses the child.
I would recommend to talk to him about this and if he understands then it's fine or else you have to do somthing for yourself it would be hard but you don't have a choice.
Asker+1 yYou are right thank you. Namaste
I live on my own and with my parents. I moved to an apartment in another state. But since this pandemic and being able to telework l went back to live with my parents. Because in a apartment there's nothing do after work. At my parents house, they always have plenty of landscaping work that needs done, someone to play cards with, and just someone to talk to.
Additionally, it is hard to find any woman close to my age who do want to settle down and start a family. That is the other reason, l go back and live with my parents for long stretches of time.00 Reply
+1 yIn this day and age perfectly normal. Let's face it, living on your own is not attainable for most people who are 18 and just out of high school. They couldn't go to college if they were on their own and hold down a job that wouldn't even give them a living wage. Most will stay at home until 21 or until they can swing it so they can afford to move out.
20 ReplyI think it's very normal especially since you can't be expected to have a job that pays enough to be able to get your own place from the moment you get out of high school. It's also a way to get some savings if you already do have a good job and if you're not going to college.

+1 yNo not in my day (33 years ago) parents were in control of kids ! Today kids control parents, so parents need to stop being pushovers! And lay down the law! 1st of all why would you want to live with your parents? Rent is no different today compared wages when I turned 18 plus if I stayed living at home my dad would make me pay rent anyway plus still follow my parents rules. If you aren't making enough money then get YOUR LAZY ASSES out bed and WORK MORE HOURS OR GET A SECOND JOB! What the hell is wrong with you people, including your parents put your foot down!

+1 yAshamed? No. Not proud, either. The old model of "reach 18, automatically move out immediately" was a novel idea two and a half generations ago, but before and since, it hasn't worked out especially well. It's not a bad idea to do, but it's troublesome to expect.
12 Reply- +1 y
Why /what makes it troublesome? It's not troublesome it teaches how to manage your money and how to grow up! Think of this, is it really fair to your dad and mom or just 1 parent , to bust their ass more now to support a young adult who doesn't want to follow their rules either!
- +1 y
@19vetteman91 What makes it troublesome is that wages haven't kept up with inflation in general, let alone housing costs. For many of the jobs available to people with no experience, living independently requires going into debt.
+1 yIn my country, it is very normal to stay with parents after 18, but I can understand how it would be different in other cultures.

+1 yNothing to be ashamed about. I’m 22 and still live with my family. It’s normal, most the people I know are older than 18 and still live with their families. Sometimes what I do though is contribute to the household by helping pay Some bills, or doing some gardening for my house.

+1 yIts not ideal. I would be ashamed but most of my friends didn't move out til 23-28 so its almost norm here in the south. I personally hope to move out before 26. We hardly act like fam anyways, more so roommates at this point
00 Reply It depends on the culture in the West its seeing differently but in a country like Turkey it shouldn't be a problem because Turks in the US stay with their parents until they get married

Asker+1 yYeah i know but 18 year olds generally study in another city. I decided to neither study nor work for a year and my dad doesn't like that, briefly.
I lived with my parents until I moved to college. Then moved back for a year after college. You’ll naturally want to enjoy your freedom once you get the taste of independence.

The problem is.. my dad makes fun of me and says he is ashamed of me. I should be more like my brother who is living with a friend now- +1 y
My parents we’re like that too. It’s messed up because they think they are “motivating” you but really it doesn’t help at all. It took my dad until recently to realize what I was saying to him, that it’s not helpful.
Realize, your fathers opinions don’t matter. Have the practice of saying you respect his beliefs. After all, beliefs are thoughts someone claims is true without evidence.
It’s not worth arguing because it’ll create more anxiety for yourself. You got nothing to be ashamed of.
My dad would always brag about my sister doing “better” which would make us work against each other. Eventually it stopped working when no said to him,
“I’m proud of her”
Or,
“She deserves a brand new car.”
Do this enough and no one can hurt you.
Asker+1 yAww thank you a lot ❤
+1 yIt's normal. I'm 21 and I'm still living with my parents. Most people in their early 20s will live with parents, unless they can live with a friend who has their own place. Or they have a long term partner they want to live with.

I have a very good amount of money saved because of it and I'd rather date a girl who lives with her parents anyway.

Wtf is wrong with kids today to even think that way! It's nothing more then pure laziness, hence so many people of today are worried about how life will go on with your generation in the workforce... think about, I won't be good!

@19vetteman91 I was living on my own when I was 18, so it doesn't apply to me. But looking at friends, some lived with their parents relatively long. Also depending on if they study or find a job. It's not uncommon if they move out of their parents house some years later. In my country it's nowadays quite difficult to get a mortgage to buy a house, unless you already have a good salary and no debts, and renting a house is quite expensive as well. So the situation has gotten more complicated in recent years.
In some other countries, it's quite common that (mainly) guys live with their parents. In Italy it's not unusual if single guys live with their parents until they're around 30. You have to take cultural differences into consideration as well.
Normal. But changes a lot depending on the country/culture. I think once you start working it's time to move out... Before it's ok to stay

00 ReplyI dont like it but when you get paid 500-600 per month and the rent is 350 i dont think you got a choice brah.. we live in bad lifetime
01 Reply- +1 y
No it's no different over 30 years ago, as min wage was $3.25 a hour and my rent was 200 a month. Try pulling that off ! Pride should get you out of parents house unless you actually are working around the house not meaning to take garbage out and clean your room but doing everything while your parents are working to support your ass so they can relax! Well here is the difference after all my bills were paid I had maybe $20 leftover for the month but not for long I just worked a 2nd job to have the extra money I wanted/needed to make it! Trust there's plenty of work out there cuz most of you still live at home and don't work a regular 40hrs a week let alone 80 hours a week !
