Do you think this is a dumb reason to not work?

Someone I know refuses to work because, and I quote, "What if I die on the way to work and there's nobody to take care of my child?" There are a lot of parents who work, so I don't understand this reasoning.

Generally speaking it is a dumb reason because you can die sitting on your couch as well. It is a reason in some fields one could such as a fire fighter or if you work on the road or in rather dangerous fields.
