When someone is waving at you but really waving at someone behind you?

I usually get something similar but backwards.

When i think they are talking with somebody else, but actually they are talking to me.

Random people, both men and women approach me pretty often, for whatever reason. A lot of the time they speak when you are not looking directly at them.

So plenty of time it has happened that they say something. I hear it fine, about a 2 meter (6.5feet) away behind me and think some 2 people are talking near me, for instance in a gym or someplace similar.

Then it's too quiet and i think why isn't the other person responding, so i look back. And there that person is, alone, looking at you for a response.

So i'm like, oh shit, quick mhh🤔 and try to respond with something half decent and abit supportive for their approach.

Sometimes it's just blank, nothing good comes to mind, even to ask them repeat what they said or just okay.

It's can be fun but also a pretty awkward moment.

Even when someone I know, waves at me... I don't wave back... lol

so they'll wave again, say something and then come to me, usually with a hug/kiss and I respond to that accordingly, at the very last second... lol

so it hasn't happened to me with strangers yet

So humiliating! I've had this happen to me a few times. Either they wave or actually say "hi!" and I answer them or wave back. But it was meant for someone else. I hate when that happens!

When I was 15 I was playing tennis with my friend on the first court right in front of the entrance and then two girls came in and yelled "Can we play with you?" and I got all excited and yelled to my friend "Is it okay if they come play with us?" and then the girls just gave me confused look and walked on the second court where their friends were playing.

How does that even happen? Like obviously you know if the person waving at you is someone you know and would wave at you. If it's some random of course there not waving at you.
