My step son called me crying he said his class sang the country song This Ain't Nothing in memory of those who were victims in the tornado that hit our town 11 years ago today. He wasn't born yet his mom and dad actually conceived him during the tornado which in thought was always funny this song is for him he also lost his dad when he was 8 he started tearing up his teacher said he couldn't handle it. He called us asked if we could come and get him now his mom is upset about it. How can I help them feel better? What should I say to him?

Looks like a perfect opportunity to explain that Sometimes terrible things happen to good people and we need to learn to press on in spite of our misfortunes. He needs to learn that he can't just be rescued every time life gets uncomfortable. He needs to be able to come with those feelings and still be able to function.

I guess tell him that yes it is okay to be sad about what did happen, and that crying helps him to release the pain. let him know that you will be there for him to listen and to help any way you can. tell him it is perfectly normal to feel upset about something like that.
