How to comfort a heartbroken boy?

One of my good friends recently got up the courage to ask out this girl he strongly likes, maybe even loves, and has for a while. Perhaps you predicted from the title that he was rejected flat out. He is heartbroken- near physical pain as he describes. I would like any advice on how to comfort him. Preferably something to say- for I cannot be by his side at the moment.

Additional Details: It would have involved a long distance relationship. She moved away 2 years ago, but he has never faltered in is feelings towards her. They were great childhood friends- knowing each other for 5 or 6 years. I'm a close friend to them both, so its really hard for me to take one side or another.

Trust me time heals all wounds. But there are things to speed up that process. I've learned from my past and tips from whom I consider a good friend for getting me through a tough time. I give my credit to MiketheMasterDater, he is an expert at this stuff and he helped me. Basically I was heartbroken to by my EX of a year an he helped me realize that I need to, I have to move on. I am still going through the process but what he said has helped tremendously. He gave me this advice and I'll pass it on gladly. Getting quick rebounds really does help, and trust me everyone does it even if it sounds immature. It helps get your mind off your problems. Also what I've done is hang out with friends more, go out and have a good time, go to a lot of parties and just have fun with your friends. Also I've taken up new hobbies and done things that I really enjoy more often. All of the hurt does take time but it will eventually go away and it WILL make him stronger from this experience. Step one, at least for me, is the purging of the iPod. Have him delete every sad, mopey, or lovey song on there. Every song that reminds him of love, loss, or her. Replace those songs with songs that make him feel awesome (for me that means stuff like AC/DC or Zeppelin, but that's not for everybody). We all know how powerful of an effect music can have on us, but that effect starts to multiply when we're emotionally vulnerable. Getting through this is going to be hard enough as it is, there's no sense in carrying hundreds of tearjerking reminders of her around in his pocket.
