+1 yLearning is a wonderful thing & before you journey out on your own learning some basic skills will help in the long run. Learning how to cook for yourself is a great place to start & if you can cook for yourself you’ll save money instead of throwing away money on eating out all the time. As for another good skill to learn is how to write a paper check & balance a checkbook because I hate to say it if your phone breaks or gets stolen & everything you do is online you are S. O. L. Learn how to write a resume because once you journey out into the real world & start looking for jobs you better know how to write one. Learn how to change a tire on your vehicle if you have one is a must because if you are out & about & road service isn’t available once again you are S. O. L. Learn how to file your own taxes it is easier than you think. Learn how to budget your money & most of all learn how to save money & only spend money on things you need vs things you want.

You are absolutely welcome & if you remember one more thing remember this. When it comes to life, never give up, never give in & most of all keep moving forward no matter what.

+1 yOne of the things I wish I developed more was social skills. When I was in uni, I was a teacher's pet type sitting in the front row all the time, 4.0 GPA, but I was too afraid to ask questions. I had to be called on by professors.
And some of the professors even offered to hang out with me after class after reading what I wrote to the rest of the class or boasting about my test scores to the rest of the class but I would sort of try to find a way to dodge their company between them talking to me about things that I now reflect on were so wise and valuable in life, but I was too eager to keep to myself and find a way to escape.
I broke free from that but towards my later years and already close to graduation. So if I had to do it again now that I'm no longer so shy, I would have engaged more with my classmates and professors.18 Reply- +1 y
There was a time I remember so often now when the head of the computer science department picked me out and we were walking along the bridge and he was looking at the scenery at the water. And he was trying to give me life lessons and even talking about beautiful women and falling madly in love and things like that. Then I was so shy and wondering what this has to do with anything we were learning in class and I sort of ducked out of the conversation. That's the essence of what I needed to work on in my life. I didn't realize the wisdom of it at the time. I was too focused on trying to be the top student.

Oh crap. I'm doomed. I have terrible anxiety and I'm trying to overcome it, but it is so difficult to make friends. I'm scared of talking to some people, even though they're the same age as me. I was bullied in middle school for being overly sensitive and people trash talked about me behind my back because of that. I'm working on my self confidence, but I'm introverted and incredibly shy. I'm also afraid of speaking in front of an audience
- +1 y
You can start with the smallest of steps. But it's more a people's world than a knowledge world as I see it. Being the top student doesn't necessarily help us navigate a world of flawed people who decide who to promote. You can be an ace in a subject but you won't necessarily be chosen as a leader outside the academic setting until you start developing people skills. But you develop people skills through voluntary exposure. You see every person in front of you as a learning experience rather than a detriment to your learning as I mistakenly did and you will learn people skills.

This kind of explains why I was never chosen as the class leader or anything related to being a leader. I'm not really proud of it. On the contrary, I'm quite embarrassed. I'm going to college this year and I'm pretty worried about not being able to make friends.. or acquaintances for that matter. At the same time, the school I go to, is extremely competitive and there are no real "friends" , most of the friendships are more like a "marriage of convenience" than a genuine one. those are quite toxic and not really my thing. I would like to have deep conversations with people and actually form a good connection with them. I'm trying to come out of my shell and talk to new people, one of the main reasons I joined GaG. but talking to people in real life is vastly different from interacting with them online. My heart starts racing and I end up overthinking every single thing. My anxiety is much better than it was in middle school, but it is still there.
I'm planning to strike up a conversation with someone I find intriguing when I go to college, maybe. Besides, I would also have to befriend my roommate since I'd be living in a dorm. - +1 y
And those people skills are arguably the most useful when you're left on your own, outside the metaphorical birds' nests, and especially if you get lost as often as I did. It's people who give you directions, tell you what you need to do, where you need to sign, as an adult. There's no way to be that independent unless you want to live in a cave and hunt for your own food. So it's being comfortable around other people that I see as a most valuable skill nowadays in a world full of people.

That's so true. Thank you very much for your insightful comment. I'll try to develop my social skills. Your comment has helped me a lot!

On your second post, it's not a big deal as I see it even if our attempts fail. So what? I had a major case of bad priorities back then. I was less worried about getting hospitalized by the sports I engaged in than being teased or laughed at by somebody for my social attempts. I somehow put my social reputation above my health even though I barely had a social reputation to start with! :-D
I figure these days that you go into the world true and unafraid and that's how you find your best friends and deepest and most insightful conversations. Some people will hate your true self but at least they're hating your true self and not the mask we hide behind because we're shy, anxious, or because we're trying too hard to impress.
But when you find someone who loves your true self without all that, that's a friend for life. So don't be afraid to divide your audiences into fans and haters. Speak your mind even if it has bad results, because the good ones will be too good by making a habit of doing this that it'll be worth it. - +1 y
Thank you very much! 😭💛
Your comment has given me the perseverance to try. It's so true. I have great online friends.. friends I made by speaking my mind. They know me well, and they've even helped me through some ordeals, but I also need irl friends, so I'll definitely take your advice!

Firstly,
Learn to butter people, so that it can be useful when you have a dumb boss
start learning it from trying it on your teachers first😂😂
Secondly,
Make sure your having that golden token of forgiveness, trust me many people lack it (me too sometimes)
thirdly,
Never ever demotivate or doubt yourself, duhhhhh make you believe yourself before anythin, and that kinda self love, trust me even your parents can't give it.
Lastly,
Help others always, if you can't, at least try to support them.
Yess Ikkk you, you have all these stufff, I'm sure, but yea, I teach myself those stuff :-0210 Reply- +1 y
My teachers like me lol.. but its my peers who don't. I mean, they don't "dislike" me, but they just don't talk to me because I'm shy and reserved most of the time.
Well, people do tell me that I'm trustworthy and hardworking, but I don't always get away with trouble haha
I'm working on the third point, lol. Self love is defo the best kinda love!
I try to help people, I love it, so that's not an issue

I have no idea about finances, I’m kind of scared now. I should definitely do my research and learn more about it. - +1 y
Thank you so much!
18 is plenty of time to learn. You should only worry about something like If you’re 34 obese, not taking care of your health and have been unemployed for 10 or more months. i it’s only when you are about hit your mid 30s it’s going to be too late and you’ll be stuck in your ways. But I’d say try to learn how to cook I see a lot people that don’t know how to that very basic skill. You always to be looking to Improve don’t get me wrong it’s just 18 is way too young to be worrying being stuck in your ways. But always look to improve and break back habits.
10 Reply1. Learn to cook all of the meals you like that your parents currently prepare for you.
2. Learn to stick to a budget for necessary expenses and only spend what is left over.
3. Be prepared. Store 3 weeks of extra shelf stable food just in case the stores get stripped again at some point. Always keep a few weeks of food around. Replace it as you use it. Only food that you actually enjoy eating.21 Reply- +1 y

+1 yBudgeting, fiscal responsibility, time management, and go ahead and take a refresher on basic algebra. These are things that will help you in any field you end up in.
No shit, I stole— I mean borrowed my high school algebra 2 textbook, and I'll occasionally work on some of the problems for fun like I'm playing a sudoku puzzle.11 Reply- +1 y

+1 yExcellent question...
This may seem trite and maybe redundant... learn independence skills: how to manage money, how to wash clothes, how to cook simple meals, learn what foods are good for you and which ones aren't. And improve your inter-personal skills. You are going to be at college, on your own. Be prepared for that.11 Reply- +1 y

+1 yApart from cooking, learning to drive and change the tiers can be useful.
And like one user mentioned about finance, you don't probably have to learn to do taxes for a while. Personal tax is based on income, so that's something you don't need to worry about.12 Reply- +1 y
Yeah, but it’s better to learn now than when it’s kinda too late. I know almost nothing about managing finance, and I’ll do more research on it. Thank you for the amazing tips!
- +1 y
True, but I suggest ask your parents about finance.
As a student who's not earning much, most of your concerns should be on how to plan and control your spendings.
When it comes to taxes, it is a broad area and dynamic as in many provisions changes annually.

Finance and how to do your taxes…nothing serious just a light competency can help. But at 18 have fun and be confident in yourself. Learn from mistakes and remember it’s ok to swim against the current every now and then.
