The only things your adult child should have to do is not wake you up when they return home late, or return home embarrassingly wasted.

It's one thing to behave in this manner when you live in your own apartment. When you share the space with your parents, you have to have a little courtesy. Your parents likely have jobs to go to, even if all you have to do is attend classes later in the day.

But no parent can tell an adult son or daughter they've got to be home at a certain time. Only be quiet, and not fall-down, throw-up drunk. Just as you'd be with roommates.

Yes, but I want to be clear why.

Since they are adults, I can't control their behavior nor should I have to or want to.
If I did my job as a parent, then I taught my kids about discipline, personal responsibility, and responsibility to and empathy for others. If I raised an immature hedonist, then I failed.

So, that means that my child should come home "at a reasonable hour" of their own volition and NOT bring someone home. A reasonable hour means not waking everyone up in the middle of the night or having us think that a burglar may have broken in.

I should have to tell my child what is a reasonable hour or not, but I would state what that is anyway. That's my "curfew". Exceptions are always possible as long as there's a heads-up about that or an emergency of some kind.

I don’t think I would give my son or daughter a curfew in college, in high school maybe I wouldn’t let them stay over at friends houses who I don’t trust or know their parents, but in college hopefully they’ll get into good schools with scholarships and build their own nest 😊 but if they decide to go to college in their home town maybe I’d let them stay it’s reasonable. After that though son gotta go! He can get an apartment and a job, not allowing him to be lazy. If I have a daughter maybe be better her staying with her parents until she finds a good husband and probably make her mom happy too 😊

If they still live at home then they’re not as grown/adult as people below claim. So i think a curfew of 11pm on weeknights and 1am on weekends is good. Just call me around 10 to let me know when you’ll be in

TBH even now she does not have one as long as I know where she is and who with.

I think it would depend on what they're doing. I mean are they working late hours or are they out all hrs. Of the night partying. I think I'd be more inclined to kick them out then give them a curfew.

@Subarugirl I assumed they meant someone in their early 20s, like 20-23. Which it’s perfectly normal to still live with your parents at that age. Your early 20s is the time period of everyone’s lives where you’re struggling and the most broke you’ll ever be. Not everyone gets on their feet and is able to move out as fast as others. Especially if they’re a college student who doesn’t have time to work full time. Maybe don’t be so judgmental of others situations.
But regardless, even if you’re living with your parents, I still don’t think they have the right to give an adult a curfew.
