Why do some people say it is selfish to not want children?

It is not selfish, it is a choice.

Just like it is a choice to prefer a partner of a certain ethnicity and not another or to chose a partner from the LGB community. People tend not to make the difference between choice, racism or being selfish.

Furthermore, our planet is way overpopulated and putting more children on this planet only makes it worse of it on the long run. It is actually better not to have any children because you actively do something against overpopulation, poverty and starvation.

The less new humans are born, the more those that need food can potentially benefit from the lower birthrates.

Also, the planet will thank anyone that is not producing children.

I haven’t a clue. Personally, I do want to start a family. Some friends I have don’t. I don’t consider them selfish. It is just a personal choice.

Those who consider it selfish should think about how some people are not financially prepared or able. Others may have no interest in raising children and therefore be less than ideal parents.

There are many more reasons to not want to have children, just as there are for having them.

Because some people who have ended up hating their life ever since it became filled with the screams of little brats are jealous of people who seemingly lead enjoyable lives.

With nothing else left for them to feel good about, and a gnawing sense of "maybe this wasn't the right choice for me", they justify their misery as a virtuous sacrifice to society or some greater purpose.
To them, people who don't make the same "sacrifice" are selfish, because they chose comfortable carefree living instead.

It's a "I suffer so you ought to suffer as well" mentality.
