My Japanese parents didn't teach me any domestic skills... is it still my fault for not learning?

I hate to say it but I can't even make a simple Sushi roll at all. I'm an Asian-American that can't bake nor cook anything. I just come from work and college, waiting to be served by mom.

My parents didn't teach me how to cook, do the laundry nor clean the bathroom. Is it still my fault for not learning any of that? They didn't think it was important for me and instead want me to finish my major.

Interesting question! I think it's a bit of a the fault of you as well as the fault of your parents. What I think it comes down to is simply 'neglecting an important aspect of your education... to put all their focus on your scholastic education".

So I definitely do think your parents should have tought you the simple things anyone needs to know. There really isn't an argument to be made that you wouldn't need to know these things... no matter how fancy your degree.

(keep in mind, I'm not sure if your 18 or 24). As you got older though, and saw this deficit in your practical knowledge... you really could/should've taken the initiative to say to your mom, "hey, next time you put in a load of laundry, will you show me how to do it?

So... both your faults.

But... I do have some good new for you.

None of those things are exactly rocket-science to learn to do. I am confident that if you put your mind to it, you could learn to do laundry or clean the bathroom. A sushi roll... I am less familiar with (that.. gave me a chuckle... thanks) 🙂

It is from this moment on. All parents are REQUIRED to do is keep you healthy and alive. Some kids take advantage of the free wonderful opportunities to learn from their parents. Some don't

I was flabbergasted when my daughter of 16 (then) did not know how to do laundry. The dryer was running for several hours. I went to check why and her clothes where still sopping wet. I turned on the light and the washing machine was still full of dirty water. Calling her to me I asked what she did. It is obvious though. She was all advanced placement classes. So pointing at the words on the underside of the lid and said read/ do.
So even if your parents don't teach you squat you can learn.

Fellow Asian-American here, it is not your fault that you don't know domestic skills. If your parents wanted you to know how to cook or bake, they would have taught you.

You don't specify if you live with them or not. If yes, it's never too late to ask them to teach you. My mom's an amazing cook and one day, I was curious as to how to make one of her dishes and asked her. She taught me, and I've been learning since. If you don't live with them, you can Google recipes online. The internet is an invaluable source.

I live with them. I'm going to ask my mother about the Sushi rolls and then use Google. Good point.

There is always Google and youtube as your teachers. My mother didn't teach me to cook nor clean a house either but it was partially my fault for not searching the Internet (I got spoiled at home sometimes) either. I didn't learn those things till age 29-30 years old.
Now that's late.

Well, what's stopping you from learning it on your own? There are some skills you don't want to do that with, like heart surgery or landing an airplane, but I think you'll agree that the consequences of a botched fish roll are a LITTLE lower than either of those, no?

It's not too late so you can start now. You can also use the internet for information.

You have internet access. It's the largest library out there... You should be able to learn just about anything if you want to.

That is so unusual. I cannot imagine a Japanese mother not showing you how to cook, at least.
