Is this unethical?

Spoiler alert for those who haven't seen/read My Sister's Keeper.

In that story, there is a young girl who is diagnosed with leukemia. Her parents elect to have another child in the hopes that the new kid will be able to give her bone marrow transplants and treatments When they are older, the older sister still has leukemia and the younger sister is supposed to give her her kidney. Instead, she sues her parents at the age of 13 for medical emancipation. The parents are of course against their younger daughter's wishes for emancipation.

Is this wrong? What would you do if you were one of the parents?

I think the parents should not have chosen the new child to give medical treatment to the older child. They created a life to possibly save another life, without thinking of the possible consequences or the feelings of the newer life, which sounds manipulative to me. Suppose the new life should need her other kidney because something happens to herself in the future? Suppose she was not born healthy?
If I were the parents, I would have elected the best possible treatment for their daughter but not create another child to have the burden of jeopardizing her own life for the sake of the older sister.

That's very wrong, completely unethical. You don't have children for the sole purpose of providing spare parts for someone else. What would I do if I were one of the parents? I'd NEVER be a parent like that to begin with!

As a sibling who's a brother to a sister who had chronic kidney condition I say, "No" this isn't wrong. My parents did not give birth to, and raise us for parts. Though one of my sister's did donate one of her kidneys to extend my other sister's life. I'm not a parent. But I couldn't imagine a parent who could exploit another one of their children like that. Even to save another one of their child's lives.

The mother was the only one who wished to treat her older daughter with her younger daughter.

Neither the husband, the older daughter wanted this to happen.

Cameron Diaz, and Alec Baldwin are the two actors I remember from that movie.

Each person, when donning an organ, should always have the right to say yes or no too many times. A person only has a limited number to use. a kidney is something you only have two of. What happens if you give one to a needy person & then the only one left starts to go bad & can't do all it was intended to do. My dad lost one of his kidneys, which had to be removed, which left me very sad that if something happened to the other one, he could die.

She is still a child. Underaged and cared for by parents…In other words child is parents’ responsiblity.
Parents have final say AND not government, media, social services etc ‼️

The kidney is the girl's... it is not up to the parents to tell a 13 year old to have surgery to cut out an organ.

Ya I think I read this book earlier. Leukemia already takes one life in a lot of cases, it doesn't need to destroy another. I support the sue, I think it's cruel to use one kid as basically just a resource for saving your other kid.

I would accept the younger childs decision, each and every person has the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" as soon as the baby took it's 1st breath, it was an individual Not a "body farm"

I saw the movie. Is very hard to say.

I agree that the child shouldn't be made to give her organs. But I get what the parents were trying to do. They loved their child after all.
