I think it was a good middle point... because yes I do have a respect for the elderly, but if you're and old creep sexually assaulting a very young girl, don't expect me to just look away and let you do your sick stuff

I think older people should be respected unless and until they provide a reason to no longer respect them. After that, unless that represent a threat to you, they should at least be treated with civility.

I think elders deserve only the benefit of the doubt, not innate respect. To be fair, they've been alive longer, made more mistakes and fixed them, etc. But frankly, the difference between respectable and non-respectable people is a larger gap than mere age can rectify.

From my perspective respect is earned. It has nothing to do with age. I will respect whoever respects me regardless of their age. So only elders who are respectful should be respected.

What you mean is "care" not "respect".

Respect means fuck all as most of the time it's just a charade anyway. Whereas care is black or white.

Too many people are hooked into the "respect" bullshit, when they know nothing of it and have no skin in it.

It's just a word that has lost it's meaning as so many people misuse it to mean what they want.

Strom Thurmond, the oldest man to ever serve in the senate, was supposed to be a notorious butt pincher and allegedly once fondled a female senator’s breasts, thinking she was a staffer. He was also, in his younger days, a vocal segregationist who secretly had a black daughter.

He was a racist, sexist pig and the fact he rode this rock around the sun for 100 laps didn’t make that dinosaur worthy of respect.

I’ll routinely give up seats on a bus or subway to the elderly.
