Do you think older people should be respected?

There's a belief here in the Philippines that you should respect elders despite of how they treat you. You shouldn't answer back even if they mistreat you cuz its impolite. People would think you are in the wrong cuz they are older even if they wrong you should always respect them. Well not to me Most of my older relatives are not polite and most are abusive and still expecting for younger people to respect them jusr because they are old so I dont respect them. I believe respect is earned not given. I will treat you with respect if you do the same to me.

From where I come from, we are also taught to respect those older than us. No matter what evil deeds they commit or anything else. However as time went on I asked my self if it is really necessary.
Even if they disrespect you to a certain extent it's better to respect them.
If you disrespect someone you will be
like that person however if you repay disrespect with respect , they will one day realize how bad their attitude is.
