Well there's two possibilities why that's the reaction from him.
1. He may have feelings for you and then saying that hurts him. In which case, you shouldn't feel bad since there's not much you can do.
2. He may probably just feel uncomfortable with those comments. In that case maybe you can confront those people together and make it clear you're just friends.
