Why do you think people are so much more likely to adopt a dog or a cat than a human child?

@artsy_dragon nailed the main reason: kids are so much more difficult and are so much more resource intensive over such a longer period of time.

That said, it's also different. Wanting a cat or dog or parrot is a completely different thing than a child. It's not like asking do I want chicken soup versus vegetable soup. It's like saying do I want a cheeseburger or a Ferrari. They're not even comparable.

As painful as it may be, it'll die in about 8-12 years.
Plus it's much cheaper.
