Is it wrong to have cats live in a shed?

My friend has two cats that live in this shed, one side of it they can see outside but they are always in there, concrete floor maybe a few blankets, food, litter, no toys. I keep telling my friend it doesn't seem right, cats need to be played with and have company, they need to be with a family that will actually care for it. Am I overreacting?

I would say so.

Laws protecting animals are sadly extremely weak or nonexistant in most places so whether this person is actually breaking the law or not is questionable.

It is along way from being a good home for them though, lets start with that, so if this friend of yours believes that they are doing a good job looking after those animals then they are wrong. That is an objective fact and not open to debate.

You have done more than enough.

When i was a boy there were tom and feral cats on the farm. Temperatures as low as 15 F/-17 C. They lived in the center block garage, barns, and there were few bricks out the foundations of the house for air flow. This was their favorite spots as heating unit would seep down through insulation and keep those areas warm They never came in and some were never petted.

Well you're probably over reacting in some ways. If it's not just one cat, they can usually keep themselves entertained, as long as they have food, water, and a good temp they'll be fine. However cats shouldn't really be left outside because they're one of the top killers of birds.

Yes, that's like being locked up. Your friend should make a trap door for the cats, so they can come and go as they please.
