I’m pretty sure it isn’t bad. Though if you’re talking about single ladies. More often than not they end up as a “cat lady” because cats don’t love unconditionally. They don’t stay where they’re not treated right, however painful it may be to leave. Same goes for some single women - they’re single because they’re intelligent, assertive, independent and self loving enough that they won’t stay with an abuser or settle less than they deserve.

I agree with you the term itself may be pejorative. “Cat lady” is a cultural archetype most often by old maid or widow. Regardless most of cat lovers embraced the insult.
