Why do some people have dogs all throughput their lives?

Like, their dog passed away and after a while, they get a new dog an continue the cycle. If the previous dog had babies, they'd raise at least one and raise their babies too.

Why do people voluntarily go through the pain of losing a dog so many times?

I believe some people need pets to take care of and to have the company of. Other people not so much. I also think people use pets as alternatives to the company of people for a host of reasons. The fact that people now call pets "fur babies" is creepy.

Pets are not substitutes or practive for having children. They are unique animals. And they aren't people. They deserve your love, care and affection. But don't be confused. But some folk are.

I had cats for about 30 years and after the best cat died, the one that adopted my 3 year old son and lived for 17 years after that, I was done with having cats or any pets. I grew up with dogs, gerbils, hamsters, parakeets, fish, turtles, a rabbit and a guinea pig.

I found the dogs to be a lot of trouble and heavily dependent. They take a lot of care. The other little animals were nice pets when I was young. I outgrew taking care of them and they were also high maintenance, except for the guinea pig, who met an untimely death being crushed by a rocking chair. My poor dad was apoplectic. He LOVED that guinea pig as much as I did, and the pig loved to be petted by him. It was very sad.

I chose cats because they were more independent, but I also had bad experiences with cats that were destructive. But I had two very lovely cats. One that loved riding in the back window of the car on trips. The other, my son's cat, that had the best attitude and was sweet-natured.

Now, there's a cat at work that the boss takes care of and everyone at work, it's a furniture warehouse, pets and loves on and is a sweetie. And my immediate boss's' little dog, who is pretty charming. So I get my animal fixes a few days a week and that's all I need.

I absolutely don't want to see a pet die after my last cat, which I loved. And I don't want the responsibility. It's become expensive to own a cat or dog. I also don't have the extra money or time to take care of one. And when I want to take off, I don't have to find someone and pay them to watch the animal.

I don’t think about the loss. I think about the memories in between. Yes it will shatter me when my boy goes which is why I give him the best life I possibly can. I make time to adventure with him so I can look back on those memories. He’s 8, turns 9 this year, and when I look at him all I see if the puppy I picked out from the shelter. I see all his accomplishments; and death is still a beautiful part of life.


Having a pet isn’t for everyone though, not everyone can handle the heartache of losing them, and sometimes accidents happen which take them from us sooner than we’d like.

because they're not thinking of the loss... they're thinking about the love, and also how they can take care of the dogs at such a high cost, truly wonderful and kind souls out there...

and the people I know from the vet clinic/shelter are the same and perhaps even kinder, because they go through some of that way more often

they are very loving, very caring and attentive with all those sick and abandoned dogs and puppies, they bond with them greatly and then they have to let them go, and it can suck, it is difficult and hard, and also a worry... but they love the dogs so they still go and do it every single time

personally though, I was not able to do that myself... after my Luna dog passed away peacefully in my lap and arms, I was never ever to have another dog myself but I was young, and I went through a lot more at the same time, so time just went by and I never had dogs or pets again

but that lasted only till four years ago... when Luna the cat was just a little lost kitten that ended up at my yard, and she had the same coat colors, and the same icy silver, blue eyes that Luna the dog, so how could I just not? it was meant to be, I think

In a general sense they love dogs. (Substitute cats here, because that's a thing too.)

But your key question is probably the second one. That answer is because the joy of the dog and the love from the dog far outweighs the pain of the loss. Better to love and lose than never love at all.

I understand your question as well because the way I see it - for many people - the beginning and end of a dog's life is the most important parts but for dog owner's it's the middle of the dog's life that is the most important part. I think many of them think the joy of owning a dog outweighs many times over the pain of losing the dog or caring for it when it is sick. I also observe from videos I watch that many pet owners buy more than one dog at the same time so they do not lose their companion if their dog dies. I guess only a rich person can do that.

So if one friend died you would never have a friend ever again? If you finished a show your sad it ended because it was a great show you would never go find another show to watch? If you had a pizza but ate it all you would never have another pizza?

You can argue the lost of pizza isn't of course as tragic but it's the same logic. If one stopped doing things because the original ended you would have a pretty short time of one life experiences.
You would just end up miserable not doing anything out the fact whatever your doing will end to never do that thing again.

I like dogs. They are great companions and I there's no end to the cuddles, the fun and the adventures I share with my two Dobermanns.

Of course I'd be devastated if one of them died, but I wouldn't close my heart to another canine friend.

Right at the start we know our pet will not outlive us unless they're a long lived parrot species.

I guess people want the companionship of a dog is a simple answer.

Sadly some people put their dog or cat down if they get expensive with vet bills. I could never do that.

Growing up with a dog is something special sometimes. The dog is like a family member of sorts sometime. You take care of it, spend time with it, and go walking. The dog can provide companionship too. Our family dog that died was cremated and kept in a special box in our curio cabinet.

Because the value of something isn't determined soley by how long it lasts. You also aren't just getting yourself a pet, you're giving another living being a home, food, water, entertainment, safety, and love.

Because they want to avoid because hurt and broken by another person. A dog seems more loyal while it is actually depending on the human, so many people take the acknowledgement they crave from spending time with their pets.

Seems like a very negative way of looking at this. Such people presumably really enjoy the companionship of having a canine friend in their lives. You don't stop having new friends because old friends go away.
