When an acquaintance doesn't accept your Facebook friend request, does that mean they don't want to be friends with you in person?

Should I not even go out of my way to initiate conversation with them if I pass them at work, or should I still make efforts to be friends with them at work/out in public? I know it's not a good idea to confront them about the Facebook request, but does it still look just as desperate if I still try talking to them in general, or is it up to them to initiate conversation with me now?

Not accepting your FB request doesn't necessarily mean that she doesn't want to be friends in person.

Sometimes people are afraid that their FB posts aren't everyone's cup of tea. Comments about politics, religion, and attitudes on various issues on FB can sometimes drive a wedge between friendships. It has happened to me.

Maybe she's the kind of person who needs to know someone well enough to know they are on the same page before "friending" them on FB. They want to avoid disagreements.

It could just mean they don't want to be associated with you "Facebook persona". For example my sister is a teacher and she's got some raucous friends. Her private life is one thing and her professional life is another. She'd rather not be judged by her raucous friends. And being a teacher that's just one of those professions where you're judged by people for everything you're associated with.

Unless it's LinkedIn, or I have another connection from outside work, I don't connect on social media with colleagues from work. So, no, it doesn't mean that they don't want to be acquainted or even friends at the office, just that they don't want to be Facebook friends.

I can say right now, I will happily talk to people at work, but that doesn't mean I want them as a Facebook friend, especially if they are only an acquaintance! I mean if I don't talk to you or hang out with you outside of work, why would I want to be Facebook friends with that person.

I wouldn't ask about the Facebook request thing... Who even uses Facebook anymore? Even my mom and aunt are now on Instagram... I would aak them if they have Instagram and then mostly automatically you both follow each other but yeah

So personally some people want only close people to them on their Facebook accounts so they will reject you from that, however let the friendships happen naturally. No need to people please

Technically I think the proper social protocol is to ask someone before sending them a friend request.

I have no clue, I've never had that happen to me.
Maybe just ask them face to face.
It's pretty old school, but it is how we used to have to have to communicate with people.
It works very well by the way.

The thing about social media like Facebook is that everyone who is friends with you knows your business because of your post. They may have declined because they don’t want you knowing the things they post.
